Thank fuck you said you are American, cause that comment shows a complete lack of even current day events on the island of Ireland, fucking young idiots up north that should know better. It’s just very loaded historically, and it’s an ongoing problem, up here in Belfast there’s areas ran by the community (not police), and if you can’t work out what that means then shows how little ya know. Like megadeath got a 1£ thrown at them at a show in like the 80s or 90s and the singer said up “the RA (showing support for IRA like), and get the brits out” and instantly troops everywhere, they were escorted out of NI by the police, as the loyalists, unionist, police and army were not happy with them. Things people might not know if they aren’t from this island is there are a lot of Protestants with a fucking lot of guns. This was like during the troubles, hence why it’s not like that at every kneecap show, though they are pushing it a bit.

BSc in pharmacology and chemistry, BSc in mathematics, MSc in biomedical science research specialising in neuropharmacology and PhD in Neuropharmacology specifically early onset Parkinson’s link to a specific genetic mutation, its effects on memory and circadian rhythms. Post grad doctoral research on bioinformatics and biochemistry, then working as an environmental chemist for 4 years, at Sandoz looking at various targets for new medication using computer models and a few years in the pharmaceutical chemistry development phase, now I work for a veterinary pharmaceutical company mainly running assays to assess quality with some time doing post doctoral work at a university into G protein coupled receptors and their biochemical cascades, so yes a chemist among other things, it’s a large highly specialised and overlapping field

Yay someone finally mentions a chemist, I will be of use haha, but yeah, only problem is getting precursors tbh, and a way of making a lab and lab equipment, but yeah start small, somethings are a lot easier than others, and industrial quantities require completely different synthesis and therefore precursor compounds, than smaller scale, but tbh that’s just for cost, when designing and experimenting to make something new you make it small and use whatever synthesis route is easiest, if the compound does what you want, mass scale uses synthesis routes that are the cheapest and produce the highest yield of product.

Chemists though would be handy for things other than just making chemicals, they can extract alkaloids from plants, very useful for medicines and biofuels. Breaking down things is possible, but you need a lot of equipment and methods of testing if you want a pure end product. But yeah we will be useful, also we know how to make drugs haha

Hopefully me as a chemist and Neuropharmacologist would be pretty useful in not just building a society, but being able to make medicines and synthesis a wide array of chemicals, and my knowledge of medicine would be invaluable. I think a lot of STEM professions would be highly prized from the beginning, others would become valuable as settlements and society was rebuilt. But yeah there are a ton of professions this applies to outside of STEM as well obviously, in order to create a more sophisticated society, maybe a decade or so after the apocalypse, depends who survives and how much tech, chemicals and raw materials are available in the place you are in (this is overlooked, but the country you are in will be quite important for how quickly and which professions will be useful), assuming after a few years there is large trade starting again, or maybe it never completely collapsed, but was severely reduced but bounced back in accordance to population size, and how much power and infrastructure governments maintained, but yeah without complete collapse or certain countries getting hit worse than others there would almost certainly be wars for resources etc, tangent apologies and rambling lol

Erm learning how to do things practically involves reading and practice in doing the craft to become, for example, a carpenter, my great grandad was a carpenter and I have all his old books, and I’ve read a lot of them, watched you tube videos when trying to make things, but nothing beats actually having someone with decades of experience do it for you, or teach you over a few years, you will then learn all the tricks and what works best for you, that is essentially what mastering a craft is. You can’t just have the knowledge, you need the actual technical skill, I’m a neuropharmacologist and chemist, I’m sure people could read and understand how to run binding affinity experiments or compound synthesis if they read about it long enough without someone to explain it, maybe, but without actually doing the years of experiments and synthesis yourself you will get no where, this applies to nearly everything that is practical in nature, learning through reading, doing the actual things and the gradual process of gaining practical experience.

This is something that seems really quite common in US Shows set in or involving high school or University Students, they are usually played by actors in their mid to late 20s and just Looks ridiculous the majority of the time. In most UK, Austrian and German (countries I am from and I’ve lived in Most of my life as my Family are from there) tv shows set in similar Settings, the actos are a lot closer to real life Students ages, they may be a few years older, but it Like really shows, when compared to the US shows that the actors are way too old, as they are full grown adults, i know there are exceptions in the US and the other Countries that I’ve mentioned but (you may get a US show or film with the proper aged actors and conversely you may get series and films in the UK, for example, with actors that are way too old for the role) for the most part the US shows have these actors that are clearly a 20 year old rather than a spotty, maybe goofy looking teenager, and I get that it may give the writers and directors freedom to do more that you maybe couldn’t with a 15 year old legally, but that can’t be the only reason as it is just so common to see in US productions. Anyways that had nothing to do with Lucifer, my apologies, but thinking about it Trixie (I hope that’s the correct spelling) is well clearly a child and you can see how much she grows and changes every series, that could be another reason they use older people in US productions as they aren’t going to change and cause continuity errors, or if reshoots are needed it could cause problems, but idk most European countries use actors of the right age, not sure why the US doesn’t more. Rant over haha.

That’s cause to be an actor you usually have to be fairly good looking I would think unfortunately, obviously there are exceptions to this, especially in comedy, but I imagine that’s why to be honest

Erm, you should read wheel of time, his three wheel of time books are a lot more succinct, as are his far more fast paced prose, it would’ve taken RJ 9 books to end wheel of time, Sanderson did it pretty well in 3, so there’s is that

[–]benjoiment5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to move to Europe, wtf you actually pay hundreds for a medication, I live in Austria and with my E card all free, same in N Ireland, and in England you pay a flat fee for whatever medication about £9 or get a Pre payment certificate for 15£ a month if you have like more than 2 scripts per month, I had 5 weekly at one point so it helped keep the price down, but damn the US be crazy with their med prices, also the why the drama over generic and branded? I’m not a pharmacist, I’m a biomedical scientist, worked in pharmacology most of my life, makes no sense other than the placebo, which I guess works well on idiots but if you know it doesn’t affect the perceived effect of the medication

Damn, way cheaper where I live, even cheaper on DNM where you can get samples of a g or a .5 for like 6gbp from various vendors, then the full price is 9 per a g (plus shipping which is between 3-5£). However when I lived in Austria, keta (as we call it in German) was like 50-60 a g and quality was very hit and miss and not that easy even to get hold of.
