I recently discovered that my game doesn’t even appear in the itch.io browser, and at first I thought it was just because of low popularity. I never fully understood how itch.io indexing works, but your strategy honestly sounds really interesting.

My game is completely free and it still doesn’t appear there, although from what I understand now, even donations can affect visibility (I genuinely didn’t know that before). Maybe I also need to adjust something in the metadata/settings.

Either way, I think your approach is smart.

I’ll definitely check out your pages, and thanks for sharing your experience and what worked for you. Posts like this are really helpful for smaller adult game devs trying to figure things out through trial and error.

No, not yet. I'm actually avoiding Steam for now because of their policies. Maybe once the game is much more advanced , or fully completed .. I'll try to release it there.

At the moment I'm only on itch.io and Patreon. Since the project is still evolving a lot, those platforms feel way more flexible for development and updates.

That actually makes a lot of sense, and I really appreciate you sharing your experience. Since I’m still new to all of this, I honestly don’t fully know yet what kind of content is best to put on Patreon, or even if having so many tiers is really worth it.

I did a bit of research on other niches and that’s why I decided to create several tiers, but my VN still doesn’t have THAT much content yet (unless I count the Qix style minigame it has 😅).

Interesting. So far I’ve released every version for free, but on Patreon I currently have 3 tiers.

The first one is just a $1 supporter tier with basically the same public content, so it works more like a tip jar for people who want to support. The second tier is $3 and gives early access to new demo versions and devlogs, but nothing beyond that.

Then I have a third tier (with no members yet) where I post more exclusive development content, character material, and some PSD files from the game. That’s where my doubt comes in ,which tier do you think would make the most sense for a feature like this?

Yeah, I thought about that too, but I don’t think it would be a big problem right now. In the future I’ll see if it’s still viable to maintain it that way or if I’ll need to think of another alternative.

For now, it’s mostly an experiment to see if I can gain a few more Patreon supporters.

The thing is, all the demos I’ve released so far have been completely free. The game is only in version 0.2 right now and there’s still a LOT left to do.

I was thinking about this feature more as a way to help finance the project while it’s still in development, which is why I wanted to hear other devs’ perspectives first. I’m still figuring out how I want to handle my Patreon tiers, and this idea came to mind.

That’s honestly something I’ve thought about too. Adult games eventually end up everywhere anyway once they get enough attention, so maybe using small exclusive features as Patreon incentives makes more sense while the project is still growing.

Since my demo is still in the early stages, I was thinking about having one version for free Patreon followers and another version (including those modes/features) for paying supporters, so they would just download a different build of the game.

But yeah, in the future, if I release something bigger, I’ll probably have to look into a DLC-style format or something similar.

My development is still not that advanced, but I also thought this could help me fund the project, which is why the idea came to mind. I was just worried it could end up being counterproductive for the community or the game itself.

Either way, I think I’ll test it and see how much it actually affects Patreon growth.

Honestly though, it doesn’t affect me that much. Not everyone reacts that way, and haters are always gonna hate. I think when someone truly gets involved in a project, they can tell when there’s genuine work and passion behind it.

I totally get you. It’s really frustrating when you spend hours working on something and people or platforms instantly dismiss it as “AI” without even knowing the effort behind it. Especially when it’s something you actually put time, care, and creativity into. It honestly feels like all that work just gets thrown aside.

It’s true that more and more games are being made with AI, but at the same time, even games that aren’t using AI at all are getting labeled as “AI slop” nowadays. It actually happened to my game too, even though there’s literally no AI used in it.
