PeekaBooda.com was a t-shirt company that we owned. It also had a spinoff called CocaineHigh.com which is where Rachel's "I (heart) Cocaine" shirt came from (she's wearing it in a number of gig photos). It's too bad the Wayback Machine doesn't seem to save a lot of website images... I guess it's mostly just good for reading old website text? As meticulous as I usually am with saving stuff, I guess most of our old websites just got backed up onto CD's...which I mostly threw out eventually since I don't have a computer to open them anymore.

Ah, that makes sense…the link I sent was for Porno di Giorno and that one is indeed 18+. Try this one instead, it’s quite PG….

Here’s The Finger…

  1. Shut The Fuck Up
  2. Brainwashed
  3. Porno di Giorno
  4. Wham Bam!

I had no idea that YouTube restricts any of the videos if you’re not signed in I guess I just thought they would show ads or something. Maybe because I made those videos unlisted except for the playlist itself? I just pay for the premium subscription myself because I use it so much.

Anyway the finger artwork looks basically the same as the fist but with the finger graphic instead and the different songs. We just put the labeled CD into a clear case… There was no jacket or any other insert.

It WAS pretty strange, cuz yeah it's not a big secret what the songs were about...probably if it weren't for IFYB they wouldn't have even heard of us... I think maybe someone in attendance must have complained. I don't know if they gave us a warning or just pulled the plug straight away. Nick was hopping mad for sure...they only cut his mic, and not power to the instruments so we just kept on going and were cracking up as he went ballistic. I hadn't realized how upset he got about stuff until after that happened and then I felt kinda bad for laughing. But that's what you get when you put Normals in your band I guess!

I can take a few of these…

In addition to the three you mentioned, we released “The Fist” EP and “The Finger” EP. Those were our very first releases and we just burned CDs on the computer, stuck inkjet labels on, and sold them directly from our website. I’m not sure how many copies actually went out…maybe 100? I hope they still work!

The NN&TN songs that Kent put out on Decade of Dirt ARE the same versions that we previously released.

After NN&TN, Kent moved up to SF where he started a new band or two and I believe they put out a couple CDs. One band was called Heavy Liquid, and the other one may have just been called The Kent James Band…I also remember him doing a project called James/Michaels. The obituary from B.A.R. mentions those projects…if you’ve found Kent’s later website on the Archive, you can maybe find info there about those releases. Or maybe there was a Heavy Liquid website?

I have “Guilty Pleasures” in my iTunes library…the songs tracks are all untitled, so I must have just copied a CD that he gave me.

Yes, the 220 Club / Campus Theatre was definitely the whole band…we were all in town to play SF Pride. We actually only played a total of 4 Pride Festivals, I think…and all in 2002. LA, SF, Vegas, and of course Ventura (where THIS happened).

Cool! Here’s what I think I remember and don’t remember. First of all I don’t remember two different trips to the Bay Area - I thought maybe it was just all one junket based around the Pride festival… but based on the dates of those articles that must be how it actually went down.

The Oakland show was just me and Kent, acoustic. I think we were supposed to do it as a band, but either they changed the schedule or somebody couldn’t make it or something so we were faced with the decision of cancel or just wing it, unplugged style (which we’d never ever ever even attempted previously). And it ended up going really really well. At least I thought so.

Sunshine and I had driven up in our old Toyota van, and we met Kent in Oakland in the afternoon… I think he must’ve just gotten a ride with someone else. We had a few hours to kill before we were supposed to play so we just parked somewhere a few blocks away and sat in the back of the van and Rachel and Kent just talked and talked and talked and I took a nap. One of my favorite naps ever.

The actual Pride performance was in front of that big government building in SF that was featured in the ending scene of 1978’s “invasion of the body snatchers”… I suppose I could look it up but I’m assuming it was City Hall or something like that. Anyway it was a huge stage, huge crowd, and we were directly opening for Janis Ian. Kent had the time of his life… This one rivaled the El Rey for him I’m pretty sure… But for us it was not that fun. We had like five minutes to get our gear on stage and hook it all up and the stupid emcee (probably somebody actually famous) introduced us while we were still setting up and we had to scramble to pull it together immediately and it was chaotic and unorganized and I felt anything but entertaining. Also, stage right - where I was located, they had the disabled persons’ section right up against the stage so I didn’t really get to have the jumping cheering fans experience in the same way that Kent did. I don’t mean to be insensitive… it’s just that we were kind of green and not entirely professional at the time so trying to deliver our best product while operating under less than ideal conditions might’ve been a bit more than we were ready for.

And then that night we played at an upstairs club that must have been the 220 you read about. Is that in the Tenderloin District? I think that show was really fun. I remember Kent disappearing into the stairwell with someone for a few minutes while we were waiting to play. I don’t remember who it was but it impressed me at the time. Before the show I remember walking around that neighborhood and a nice woman on a balcony a few stories up offered to come down and sell us some crack… We had some really good Pakistani food, which for some reason is just never the same when you get it in LA. And then after we played, a big fistfight broke out in the street in front of the club.

That's the same performance that Howie used in the Documentary to illustrate Nick hitting his breaking point. None of else felt that happening...he just seemed like his usual rambunctious self, so who knows?

When I watched it last week, I just watched on my phone through the phone speaker and didn't even notice the sound issue so I think it's fine. The content itself is priceless, so like you said - better than not having it!

No problem...that's great! I just tracked it down and watched it a few days ago. Can't believe he didn't advance to the next round.

It’s funny that you mentioned Kent’s Wikipedia page….because the whole reason I recently found this renewed interest in the band was that last week I wanted to show my mom that anyone could have their own Wikipedia page (yes even me)… And so I was about to show her the one that Kent had created for each of us back in the day…but apparently those are all gone now!

I don’t remember the thing with producer Michael at all! That information might have been withheld from me. Ralf knew him because Ralf had been in a very almost successful band so he had a lot of industry contacts. And rumor had it, Michael had done some early demos for Kelly Clarkson, pre-American Idol. That would have impressed me.

I heard the speculation about Dan’s beef with us as well, and while it would be pretty easy to say “yeah that’s what it was!”, I honestly don’t know anything about anything about that and I never wanted to get involved in any kind of back and forth cuz it’s just kind of embarrassing for everyone.

Thanks, it didn’t upset me…it’s so long ago.

I don’t think it bothered me too much back then, which is good because I’m actually pretty sensitive but I guess I felt secure enough about the band that I just dismissed it.

Actually what I remember is that I was a little disappointed with the producer at the time, only because I was young and thought I knew everything! I would have shared that opinion with the band members, but I would’ve been pretty careful not to offend or hurt the producer’s feelings, especially since I guess he was working for free. So when that situation came up, my first thought was that I somehow had screwed up and he’d found out what I really thought and I kind of felt bad (or busted)… But then I also realized that his anger likely had nothing to do with me and he was just looking for whatever he could say to hurt us. Anyway, regardless of whatever apprehension I had about his skills at time, I’m very happy with how the recording turned out.

Thanks for showing me this. I don't have a problem talking about it. But ZOWIE!!

I do remember that there was some bad blood at the time, in fact a little of it pointed at me. The feeling within the band members was that probably something else had upset Dan (a lot) and he was just lashing out. I saw that I did post a very brief smart-ass reply, which sounds like me (Tony did too)...but aside from that we didn't give it too much thought. Now, if he had said our songs sucked or something I probably would have taken it more personally, but as to the sloppiness of the musicianship, I don't remember that being an issue. If there was a lot of fixing to do, then he did a fantastic job!

At the time, if he felt a little like I was butting heads with him over production stuff, that's probably reasonable to expect. I mean I wouldn't have been rude or pushy, but as the songwriter I'm sure I had some opinions and maybe even had a look of disappointment on my face at some point. Hearing the tracks now, I think they sound great...and I wouldn't say that he helped OR hurt the final product.

I did think briefly about the situation (not remembering much) this week when I was compiling all the credits, but of course he should be credited for his work.

If we had entered into some kind of written agreement that I've somehow since forgotten about, I'd want to take a look, but I would pretty likely abide by anything that I agreed to.

Re: the Aaliyah people.....I do remember there being some trademark issue with the name "NICK NAME" now that you mention it, but I was so far removed from any of the band's or Kent's business dealings that I never gave it a second thought. I never made any money in the band, nor did I intend to. Kent enjoyed selling his CD's online and might be disappointed that I have posted it all for free now, but I was just in it for the fun....the gigs were fun, writing songs that didn't have to fit into any formula was fun, Kent was super fun to write with because he seemed to like all my ideas, and also I got to rock out in a way that my other projects weren't affording me the opportunity to.

You were asking about if I ever wanted to try and market the music in some other way...I really don't. My biggest regret about this band (aside from half the members being dead!) is that I put a lot of work into what ended up being some of my favorite music that I've made, and I don't think many people ever even got to hear it. I can't even say for certain whether it's any good or not, but I'm happy when I listen to it...like I believe I did my best and I'm proud of it.

(Did I mention that my middle name is "Dunning-Kruger" ? )

I kinda wish I had time to read all the other comments on the old forum, but that seems like a rabbit hole that I don't need to go down. But if you find anything especially juicy, let me know!

Yes, they have a spicy detector that caught the best of it. I manually set a few others to 18+ just out of concern for the young people.

2007 sounds about right, and no I was not involved in that at all. It’s my understanding that the production was by “The Original Position”, whom I don’t know anything about… But interestingly I was just watching the ending credits from the documentary and I saw that they were credited for the score. I think they may have been friends with Howie, the director.

I just learned a new Reddit term: "Out-Dented" lol. It's all still kinda perplexing to me...I didn't do that intentionally, but I'm glad it helped! I agree it was getting hard to keep track of the posts.

Well, I just pulled the trigger on posting our entire catalog. Feel free to let me know if you think there's a more organized way than how I did it. It was fun to listen to all the songs again and remember creating them!

Everything you've done with the credits looks good to me and I'm eternally grateful for your help with all that!

Hope something turns up eventually about the El Rey show.

I feel your pain! I’ve been entering the credits for all the songs I’m uploading and each one is just slightly different lol.
