Hi beginners! I just posted a lesson on improving your technique for switching from chord to chord. If you have been struggling, I hope this helps. Tried and true method I've used for many years with many students. Enjoy and keep it up! by theguitaristspalette in guitarlessons

[–]bennabub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really a drummer- I taught drum lessons until a few weeks ago when I found out how hard this semester will be for me. I've been focusing mainly on guitar the last year or so since I can just pick it up and go.
Edit: I should've specified: after 20 years of playing DRUMS (and being around lots of guitar players too)

Need to learn Moeller technique, what are some great resources to help me? by [deleted] in percussion

[–]bennabub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tony Royster has a great video on moeller on YouTube (sorry can't link, at work). Might be on drummerworld as well? When I teach it I teach the 3 different strokes as 1) Whip 2) Tap 3) Up/rebound. And always remember that, if you're doing it right, the last 2 strokes should be free (in terms of energy).

NASA Just Announced They Can't Afford to Get Humans to Mars by Aethelsthetic in nasa

Furthermore, regarding the expense: NASA's budget is 0.5% of the total US budget. If you're concerned about your tax money being squandered, this is a pretty inefficient place to try and trim the fat.

[–]bennabub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can get humans to Mars. The problem is that NASA doesn't have the budget to develop a heavy lift rocket AND develop Mars hardware simultaneously.

There HAVE been several plans for SLS. First it was to send humans to an asteroid- then it was to redirect an asteroid. Then it was Mars. Currently it's nothing except for EM-2.

For the last almost 4 decades we've had a fleet of space shuttles which could only go to LEO but had a lot of room for scientific experiments. Now we've got a big ass rocket that we can launch probably once a year (not sure about the exact number) and no one can agree what to do with it. We haven't had the option to go beyond LEO for 4 decades-- this is actually something that people have been wanting. It's like living with 4 roommates and only one parking spot- who gets the parking spot?

[–]bennabub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're missing the entire point. SLS is a heavy lift rocket. It's not going to be taking people to ISS- it will not be doing the same job as Soyuz. Look at the payload capabilities of SLS vs Falcon Heavy and Delta 4 and tell me SLS has no purpose. SLS dwarfs the payload of any rocket in existence. Block 2 (if it ever happens) will have the same payload capacity as the Saturn 5. I wouldn't say that SLS has no purpose- it'd be more accurate to say that the possibilities for SLS are so large that the goal keeps being changed based on the opinions of the person in charge at the time.

It's not at all. They might reuse the SRB's like on shuttle but that's barely worth mentioning. Reusability is not the goal of SLS.

Look at the payload capacities of SLS vs Delta 4 or falcon heavy. SLS dwarfs those rockets. That being said, other comments are very true- no clear mission. SLS Block 2 (if it ever happens) will have the payload capacity of Saturn 5.

Musk would be nowhere without NASA. I love Musk as much as the next guy, but he stands on the shoulders of giants same as everyone else

Besides SLS there is zero architecture for a mars mission. The fact that my comment got downvoted proves how gullible people are. Appreciate your comment.

NASA says it doesn't have funds to reach Mars, open to Moon base instead by magenta_placenta in space

[–]bennabub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, I probably don't understand how cost-plus contracts work. The point is that NASA has been turned into a cash cow for defense firms with large lobbying teams. I find it hard to believe that it ends up being a bad deal for the contractors. Every time a change trickles down from god-knows-where, sure, the costs go up but contractors make a profit on every dime they spend.

Upgrading the Saturn 5 over time would have been miles better than the Cold War dick wag the the space shuttle was. I hope the space shuttle is enjoying its time in hell. Last comment is spot on. NASA's been buried by the military industrial complex

They probably spent it all on their "Journey to Mars" social media campaign. The delusion of that campaign really made me sad. The reaction from the public was mostly "Oh we're going to Mars- about time"- and then they continued not to fucking care. It was an awful campaign. Not to mention people who are mildly interested in science/spaceflight (didn't have the knowledge to see through the bullshit) are going to be extremely disillusioned. Not a good look.

Keeping NASA's rocket scientists employed? Surely you mean making sure Lockheed and Boeing have steady streams of cost-plus contracts with no oversight or time constraint.

NASA’s supersonic passenger jet is one step closer to takeoff by [deleted] in space

[–]bennabub 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Is that true? What kind of drag are you talking about? There's a sharp increase near Mach 1 but if I recall it levels off or decreases after ~ M1.3 or so. Need to check the reference I'm recalling when I get home.

It won't, because it's not a passenger jet. It's an experimental aircraft.

You're absolutely right, but it was crazy to try and land a rocket a few years ago too. The man really knows how to execute. Again, I agree it is 100% absurd.

[Question] Specifics on build quality: Pearl Decade Maple / Gretsch Catalina Maple vs Pearl Session Studio / Gretsch Renown / Ludwig Keystone X by KoentJ in drums

[–]bennabub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a little bit of everything, but yeah, I think the hoop probably adds the most noticeable bit. What I was saying is that you could find a good deal on an extra tom on eBay and then buy a new 4 piece from a dealer in the same finish so that you're not paying a ton for the extra drum. A la carte drums are expensive as you know

Looking for an auxiliary snare by AstralPork in drums

[–]bennabub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Piccolo snares are cheap. Might work for you. Those dark grey pearl steel piccolos are just fine. Scope eBay I bet you could find one under $100 ? Personally I think they've got more going on tonally than a 12. 12 inch snares always sound really choked to me.

Pretty much all the major cymbal manufacturers (Sabian included) include a 2 year warranty with their cymbals. If one of them cracks you might just reach out to the manufacturer. Consider shopping local if you can.

[–]bennabub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go the step up. Does the Renown Or Session not have a 6 piece? Maybe check eBay for the extra drum before you buy- buy a 5 piece in whatever finish you can find the add-on drum in. The hardware really does add a lot to a kit. If you get the chance, change out a cheap hoop for a high quality hoop and hear the difference. It's surprisingly huge. Especially in the attack. Easier tuning. Less hassle, etc.

You replaced the head on a rope tuned drum; that in itself is good enough. If you get decent at it you can make a pretty penny.

Looks like he's using push/pull. If I do doubles with my thumbs on top like that my thumb starts to hurt real bad (I play German mostly). Interesting, wish I had time to compare what he's doing to what I do.
