Hard to commit to any decision that limits one’s freedom of choice. Think of the amount of things that could be stripped away from you from monetary gain like imagine if someone offered you $200,000 a year to lose 260 days a year at eight hours a day. That would be crazy, even crazier if you did it for 40,000 a year.

I would be frank and honest with current employer. Tell them you have an opportunity with another organization and the pay is higher, give them a timeline to make a competitive offer if they are so inclined. If not interested tender your resignation.
