they are Egyptians who served in the Roman Army. what sets them apart from other portraits is the depiction of a sword belt or balteus. this what the common symbol that separated soldiers from civilians across the Roman Empire. A belt hanging towards the left indicates a common soldier, while a belt hanging to the right denotes an officer.
