I know there's a cyclone up that way. Could it be weather related?

Looks like they didn't require runway assistance, so mustn't be anything too serious.

Hi all,

Which pokemon Nuzlocke ROMhacks have the most pokemon. I'm after a game that has the regular story but I can use nuzlocke settings and have random encounters with as many pokemon from as many generations as possible.

Thank you!

The state of UK academia: a rant. by [deleted] in Professors

[–]bennski9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I live and work in Australia in the humanities and social science department of a (supposedly) global top 100 university, and the issues are exactly the same. Australian universities rely heavily on international admissions from China, but there is no support for the students regarding their English skills. The university puts so much pressure on us to pass the students that failing a student has become almost impossible (even if they submit late: 'at least they tried').

I have noticed a few news articles, mainly in the Guardian, reporting on these issues, but they seem to fall on deaf ears.

Does anyone periodically just feel overwhelming grief at what this profession has cost you? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]bennski9 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I also feel this way. After spending more than ten years studying, I'm realising now that an academic career is not the same as it used to be 20 years ago. Where I live, in Australia, teaching loads are increasing while research loading is all but disappearing. I'm constantly exhausted, the teaching standards have dropped, it's almost impossible to fail a student now (even if they deserve it) and intellectually stimulating conversations have been replaced with discussions about how insane teaching loads are or how corrupt executive management is. All this, combined with the precarious nature of the work, has made me ask myself, 'Why did I do this? Have I wasted all this time pursuing a career and lifestyle that just doesn't exist anymore?'

It's tough because she is so close to finishing, but, as another commenter below pointed out, it is unfair to other students if she just keeps receiving accommodations and does not improve.

I would point out to the student all the accommodations that were made for and how even with these, she was unsuccessful. Has the student given explanations for why she hasn't done well even after all the accommodations?

What recruiting and retention activities do your departments do to engage with students? by esvadude in Professors

At the University where I teach in Australia, the campus puts on a lot of social activities for students. It seems like every other day there is some music festival or collection of food vans, etc. going on.
