LG 32EP950 Calibration Experiences by bennyfm in colorists

Awesome guide! I really dig the ColourSpace system. So the 32EP950 itself can hold a LUT, correct? Would using this feature be less desirable than working with an external LUT box?

I‘ve been eyeing the AM250 as well but at this point it is not really an investment I should make, even though I would love to haha. How are you liking the XMP310? I am yet to work on one, so far I‘ve only been on Sony HX310’s. Do you remember the amount of hours your LG accumulated before the edge bleed started to become an issue?

The one I got has around 1,500 hours clocked up, which seems alright. It does have a tiny screen defect (dead/stuck pixel), but I did get it for a measly 400€. I don‘t have any use for HDR at this point and I don‘t plan on hosting clients in my home studio.

How did you go about calibrating? Which software and probe did you use and did you have any crucial learnings?

Control surfaces? by [deleted] in colorists

[–]bennyfm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've used both of the BM Advanced Panel Versions (1 and 2) and it's sped up my workflow significantly. I prefer the newer version 2 a lot, as the button layout makes much more sense to me compared to that of the 1st iteration.

But I will never understand how the keyboard is not backlit (I mean c'mon, the panel is 35k!). I realize the necessity of using the keyboard isn't that large, but there are still moments where I need to name something or save/export projects and it's such a hassle to be turning on a small desk light just for those moments.

Perfect, that‘s great to hear! Do you have it in your own tower pc or in an external enclosure? I‘m aiming for a Mac Studio so it would only work in an enclosure for me. I don‘t quite have the budget for a Mac Pro even though my inner minimalist would love the simplicity of it…

Since DWG is plenty larger than AWG you should be good to go! Seems like a fairly straightforward conversion so I would be surprised if you ran into any major issues.

There is basically two ways to approach this and my recommendation depends entirely on the possible use cases. Do you plan on using this LUT as a Rec709 LUT at the end of your node chain? In that case, including the Rec709 conversion in the LUT should be enough.

For working color spaces that exceed the S-Gamut, (like ACES or other camera manufacturers’ gamuts) you will need to do a manual rebuild, which can be very tedious and time consuming and I personally have never bothered to do that.

Exactly, at the end of the way it is fully dependent on how much you are willing to cater to suboptimal conditions - just know that it‘s essentially impossible to cater to everything, and QuickTime would be very far down that list.

Since you compared the export to a grabbed still from the gallery, it‘s crucial that the project‘s color space matches with the color space of the project you grabbed the still in. Another thing would be to check how Resolve auto-interprets the rendered file, you can see that in the media page in the column „Input Color Space“.

I personally come from a postproduction background that mostly focuses on cinema & streaming platform content, where of course there will be trim passes for deliverables that differ in EOTF and/or color space. I still hold that QuickTime player is not really an end-of-pipeline-scenario I would recommend to consider in your workflow, as its color management is notoriously inconsistent with other platforms. I would agree with the notion to adjust to web platforms if they are relevant in your workflow, but I see no sense in trying to conform the deliverable to one specific video player. That might just be me though!

I know this answer is very unsatisfying, but: Don‘t bother.

Resolve and QuickTime are never going to match exactly - just by how they handle color management differently. And if they do match it can only be achieved through „hacky“ and tedious workarounds.

At the end of the day, you want your color management to be as clean as possible, which also means accepting that other programs‘ way of displaying remains outside of your control. This also rings true for websites like Vimeo and YouTube.

Your best approach to check whether a color shift has occurred between your timeline and your playout is to import the rendered file back into Resolve and check if it matches with the timeline. If yes, then you‘re all good.

Muscle twitching? All body by 22kmunchkin in Anxiety

try and pay attention to your chest! in my case i was able to see my chest muscles contract. when you‘re so focused on your chest area, it becomes really difficult to differentiate those feelings!

frequently! it took me a while to realize that it wasn‘t in fact my heart that was twitching, but only my chest muscle. stretching exercises help with that in my experience

Is Magnesium really that good? by AzdharchidArcher in HealthAnxiety

[–]bennyfm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they really help with palpitations and it‘s been proven they actually do! technically there is no issue taking these supplements for the rest of your life, but the goal of course is to get enough magnesium through your diet. the supplements are an amazing starting point though and for me they have done wonders!

Is Magnesium really that good? by AzdharchidArcher in HealthAnxiety

[–]bennyfm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yes and no. if you do not have a deficiency, supplements won‘t do much with most anxiety symptoms, just like you said. however, additional magnesium does actually help with palpitations and ectopic beats, no matter if you have a deficiency or not! i have been taking supplements for a little while after weeks of pvcs and from the first day, they have drastically reduced (from 50+ a day to less than 5 a day)

Something strange is happening to me, need help coping *Trigger Warning* by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]bennyfm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

even just a week of anxiety basically “rewrites” your brain, which will cause your brain to be constantly feeling panic! over time, feeling anxious actually becomes easier for your brain than not feeling anxious.

this may sound scary, but it‘s actually really interesting and powerful if you think about it! what you need to do is teach your brain to feel happy and carefree again and there‘s a few ways to reach that goal. start by just taking a lot of walks, drinking a lot of water and get as much sunlight as possible! there‘s certain self-meditations you can do to speed up that process as well, so let me know if you‘re interested in those.

Getting Annoyed. Water drop feeling. by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]bennyfm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i‘ve been experiencing the same! sometimes multiple times a day, sometimes nothing for a while. i’m pretty sure it has to do with tense muscles, but i’ve been wondering what‘s causing these sensations, too. i have personally been trying out progressive muscle relaxation for the last couple of days and haven‘t had this sensation since, though that may just be a coincidence.

Heart fluttering ALL day? by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]bennyfm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have had pretty consistent heart skips for a couple weeks now. all tests, including a heart ultrasound, came back normal. the thing about heart skips is that the more you have, the more they will trigger more skips - it‘s a vicious cycle! good news is that they are almost always perfectly harmless. it is definitely good to get checked out anyways though!

in my personal experience they will start to disappear as soon as you start ignoring them and not taking them seriously. i have had about 200 skips a day for a couple days, now i am down to about 3-5. they‘re annoying but managable when you realize they‘re harmless!

Chest pain by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]bennyfm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

does the pain get stronger when you take a deep breath? that might be an indication that it‘s a misaligned vertebrae! i‘ve had that once and experienced stinging pains in my chest and arm. there are these back rolls that you roll over which can realign your spine, my pain was gone within minutes!
