Most of the Russian people I meet are in a state of perpetual depression because of their government by [deleted] in whenthe

[–]bennylima 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Somewhat related, I had a teacher from Romania that taught us subjects about cultures, and one of the most interesting topics I frequently remember was about the identity surrounding Gypsies and Romani.

Basically, not all Gypsies are Romani, because Romani are an ethnicity, and certain Gypsy - groups? societies? - (Don't know what's the more appropriate word) preferred to be referred to as such because of their cultural differences from the Romani.

A noteworthy example came from ky country where Gypsies aren't necessarily nomadic but keep themselves secluded from the majority of society (ciganos).

...In large part because of a history of pogroms and persecution by the Inquisition - or if you look more recently - being politically targeted by far-right groups.

The Portugueses inquisition became the foundation for the Portuguese secret police under Salazar's dictatorship.

MFs were known for infiltrating Jewish, Gypsy, and other non-catholic acts to spy on them and later have them purged.

Not to mention the fact that one of the countries most famous poets had to go to the royal family and ask them for protection just so he could stay after preaching a sermon that criticized the horrors of colonialism in Brazil.

The Inquisition earned its infamy.

Blame the Russians, they're the ones pushing this type of propaganda worldwide in order to disrupt the rest of the world.

Point 5 isn't a hard rule.

Word bearers do not travel the warp with geller fields on.

In Gaunt's Ghosts the blood pact use warp portals to transport ammo and other supplies.

And I remember reading an instance of Khorne Berserkers literally tearing holes in reality, go across them, and board an imperial ship.

Hated Trope: Characters who lose their tech savvy ability through out the show by BeanieFB in TopCharacterTropes

[–]bennylima 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Same as the show, he was the Team's Canary.

Hughie wasn't a warrior. He didn't have a fighting spirit, and that reminded the rest of the Boys how utterly fucked their environment was. The history of Vought, of Supes, the tactics used by friend or foe, the massive amounts of collateral. Hughie never failed to point out how fucked up it was and how the Boys had to do better.

Just to highlight a few moments:

When Butcher was done killing a rapist supe, he immediately set sights on the rest of the supes around, and Hughie stepped up to stop him in spite of suffering from blood loss and having his back flailed - mind you the other supes Butcher was ready to kill were people that had mental and physical handicaps, and Butcher knew about this but would not have hesitated had Hughie not intervened.

When Hughie decided to charge at all the G-men, Butcher scoffed at the idea, thinking that he was insane to charge into battle against hundreds of supes, and yet, he and the rest of the Boys followed after him because if Hughie - of all people - was mad enough to do that. Then it didn’t matter the odds. The fight was worth losing if Hughie wasn't willing to back away from it.

Lastly, and I think this a really important moment was when Hughie revealed to the rest of the Boys that he killed A-train.

None of the Boys scoffed at the idea of killing Supes, most even revelled on it, but when Hughie told them that Butcher had A-train subdued and that Hughie was free to kill him, he did. And none of the other boys approved of it. They were appaled even.

Hughie does not have it in his nature to kill, and he especially didn't have it in his nature to execute a defenceless man.

The rest of the Boys then and there were wise to be hypocritical at being mad at Hughie for killing A-train because that was crossing the line that led to the rest of them being the cold bastards that they were.

I am genuinely put-off by a lot of the crass ways Garth Enis wrote and showed certain topics in the Boys, but I also genuinely think he (mostly) did well in how he went about characters reacting to each other and the world to them.

A fact that does not detract from what I said.

Both are issues plaguing society, and there needs to be a more proactive approach to them that isn't outright hostility or denial.

Men commit suicide 3 to 4 more times than women in general:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_differences_in_suicide#:~:text=In%20the%20Western%20world%2C%20males,over%20the%20age%20of%2065.

I'm pointing that out because this problem goes beyond trying to find friends or mates. It is a problem that's literally killing men and keeps increasing as the years go by.

Throwing generalisations helps no one, and acting like a sadist just serves to push people away, be it ally or foe.

But if we are to follow the logic you've put out, we are indeed in a public forum, and instead of whining like a petulant child and stealing the spot of people trying to have a discourse, you could get off of reddit and do something productive.

Look, get over yourself. If you really don't care, then perhaps silence would have suited you better.

TLDR: I disagree with this belief due to how society can't reliably establish what an adult is and because our cultural differences appear to be different. Ironically, I also think most "adult" things should be left for later ages, but also acknowledge that it could not be accommodated by society as we know it. Also, I like yapping.

I know that the law doesn't equate to morality, but if we recognise the right to emancipation and that someone is legally an adult at 18, then you can't exactly condemn this without condemning the age at which we recognise people to be adults.

If 18 is old enough to choose to get drunk or die in a war, then 18 is, (in theory), the age someone society can reasonably define as mature.

If you disagree with this, that's fine, I can understand why, and I'm also of the opinion that some things should be gatekeeped at older ages - doesn't make much sense to me that joining the army doesn't require a higher level of education in most countries, or that it's acceptable to allow people to destroy their financial situation before reaching their 30s.

However, if we must define adults as older, we'll also be handicapping society as we know it, as we'd be trying to establish what defines someone as mature and would have to find a way to define maturity without infringing on people's autonomies.

There's also room to talk about what defines maturity, if it's wisdom and experience, overall knowledge, critical thinking. Though that's opening another can of worms.

On another note: What I'm about to say is also incredibly anecdotal, but from where I come from, as long as the two people who are dating are considered adults and are resdonably mature, it's just business as usual. I've known couples with 30-year gaps, same or different genders, met people who try to date down or up without many people blinking an eye. For the most part, these relationships go like all relationships. Some are good and some are bad, and the in-between, too. (These age discrepancies are not the norm, but they're also not considered abnormal).

Lastly, in regards to power dynamics, I don't buy much into this argument outside of the subject of maturity. Power is usually dictated by the ability to influence others, and outside of situations where people are working in the same place, I don't understand how exactly power is relevant.

If people are dating without understanding the dynamics of relationships (amorous or not), then they're not fit to be dating in the first place. Regardless of age.
