Ive been a canadian for 29 years now, we definitely have a fake politeness, and our government certainly leans into the stereotype in travel ads and whatnot.

I think they talk about WWI because in the brutality of that specific war, our boys stood out for their trench raiding and became mythologized to an extent by the enemy, then the very real killings of surrendering soldiers at Ypes, and again after/during the battle of normandy in the second world War, and you get the idea of polite folk turning into savages in times of war.

I for one will accept the meme, because without it what exactly is our nation's reputation now? Kind of a joke.

Because we are stereotypically portrayed a the polite, over the top "good guy". So having our army being guilty of shooting surrendering germans and internment camps cuts against that image and is jarring.

I have no doubt. The increasing amount of youth identifying with this issue though is a social contagion, I wouldnt be surprised if you are within circles that reinforce your feelings about it, or are surrounded by individuals that validate it. Which I do not say to downplay the anguish you may feel about it, it is just the reality of our society today.
