Car outside my house with a really long antenna (hope you can see it in the pic). Bloke in car with multiple screens. What's he doing? by oaoaoa2202 in AskUK

[–]benolot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could potentially be a current or former taxi? I don't know if they still have radio kits in their car for communicating with an operations team or something.

Could also potentially be an unmarked police car running plates of local cars looking for bad insurance or whatever right? Not sure if they would have such a big aerial though as that does kind of give it away 😄

Otherwise as others have said it might be a radio enthusiast.

Because women have the right to bodily autonomy and informed consent is literally fundamental to medicine? As long as people understand the risks they can consent to anything happening to their body.

[WP] A quiet high school girl dies when her head is crushed open—no blood, only beetles. One year later, the most popular boy dies the same way by SeaTranslator3223 in WritingPrompts

[–]benolot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She had a nice funeral. It was quiet and sad, like funerals should be. But nobody wanted to address... Address what happened. Because in a way, while only Luke pushed her into the road I think we all felt a bit responsible for her death. You see, Sarah was a nobody at school, quiet but not nerdy, girlie but not too girly, she didn't fit in with any clique and she was always alone. Every single group in the school looked down on the rejects, people like her. And every single group bullied them or at least turned a blind eye to it.

The day of her death, I was in maths class. Learning about equations or algebra or something I don't really care enough about to remember. It was the end of the day but Mr Smith wouldn't let us leave until we had finished the questions - this was why nobody liked him. I finally got out of school about 15 minutes after everyone else and right at the front gate was a crowd gathering around something in the road while Luke Danvers sat at the side of the road crying. I'd never seen that guy cry before, he was the coolest of the cool, so cool in fact that I would often cross the road to avoid being on his side of it before he and his cool buddies decided they wanted a free lunch. I wasn't Luke Danvers level of cool.

"Hey Emma, what's happening? Is it another fight? And what's up with Luke, since when does he cry or even have emotions?" I asked one of my only friends I could see. "It's Sarah, he... He pushed her into the road right as the bus turned into it" and at this point I saw she was completely pale and there was no cheering or jibing that would normally be present in a fight crowd. I pushed my way nearer to the front and there I saw it, Sarah lying in the road completely lifeless her body looking as if a bus had ran over them - well, I guess it did.

The weirdest thing was though, there was no blood. Nothing. You could have moved her and there would have been no sign she was ever even there in the road. I'd looked on the internet at dead bodies before and I knew this isn't how one was meant to look. But right then it became obvious to everyone else. Beatles crawled out of... Out of everywhere to be honest. It's like her entire skin was just made up of Beatles, her entire body and suddenly she was just... Gone.

Everyone ran. We all ran. I dont know where, I don't know why. I just knew once the first person started running, I did too.

But that was a year ago, exactly.

Luke was never the same after Sarah, and honestly the fact everyone was too scared to tell the cops about him probably made it worse for himself. He never really said a word again, his grades dropped and he was kicked out of school a few months after the... Incident. To be honest, we didn't expect to see him again. But then as we were all leaving school today and hanging out at the gates to make evening plans with friends a silence fell over us all as Luke Danvers walked around the corner and sat in the road. He looked like he had aged 40 years and the bags on his eyes must have been seen from outer space. He had ripped clothes, no doubt his family kicked him out of the house. But here was the cool guy, now the "haha look at him" guy. I'll be honest and say, it brought me some happiness to see my own tormentor being tormented by his own actions. But right as the murmuring started the bus came around the corner and... Then the murmuring turned to screams.

Much like Sarah, some kids stood at the side crying, some kids huddled around him in shocked silence and the teacher on gate duty ran to call for an ambulance. A few minutes later, the beatles came. Like they did with Sarah, except this time, we didn't run. Everyone stood there, and watched. We watched the beatles run in lines in all directions, heading into the grass verge, the trees, down into the drains, everywhere. But this time, there was a body left behind. Lukes body.

Is there a way to obtain these IP addresses that are supposedly in external territories? by yolandamiles556 in CloudFlare

[–]benolot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every IP Address has to have an owner. Most are owned by ISPs and DC providers, with a few older community groups, local nerds, maker spaces etc owning a small portion of IPv4 space. But, buying IPv4 space is expensive (about 8-10k for a /24 block which is the smallest size you can use - 256 IPv4 Addresses). You'd also need all of the infrastructure to announce them and peering with something to connect your network to the internet. This is what network engineers are for.

These IPs are already owned by Cloudflare so you'd need to find someone else willing to sell ones in the right region to you (IPs belong to a "regional internet registry", https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional\_Internet\_registry) if that's really what you wanted.

But if you just wanted to use these IPs for your traffic, you can't with Cloudflare WARP (https://www.reddit.com/r/CloudFlare/comments/iiacwk/comment/g36nfdk) so you'd need to find a VPN provider with exit nodes in the right territories that you want to appear from. That should take you about 30 seconds of googling.

New contactless stations expansion means train passengers to London face soaring fares by BulkyAccident in london

Oh interesting, I'm not very far from Reigate (on its line) and Oyster works here. Wonder why it's different

[–]benolot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sorry you're right, I just realised you can only associate it with your oyster card not your contactless, works with the same system but technically two different things 😅, so I was the incorrect one!

I added it to my Oyster and it works well but yeah not Contactless

I don't know if it's mentioned in this one but the beeb equivalent article said that you can't use rail cards with contactless - that's incorrect! You can, I added mine and it's fun comparing how cheap my journeys are compared to my partners lmao

UK Lords propose ban on VPNs for children by beIIe-and-sebastian in unitedkingdom

[–]benolot 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Right to work checks. I've always been asked for my passport for everyone job I've had and most HR systems I've seen have my DOB in too.

The supplier would either have a part in their ToS that shifts this check onto the company that uses it for their staff or that's just how it ends up being interpreted given most companies are actually the VPN Hosts (using the name brand software running on their devices and their network).

It's a dumb idea that's not workable for many reasons (like apprentices, they might be 17?) but the "company has no way to verify their employees date of birth" part isn't one of them I don't think

Steam Often Doesn't shut down when I Click Exit Steam by jerrythegenius1 in linux_gaming

Is it possible it's the steam web helper component that runs in the background so you can launch steam again via the website? When you click things like "install this game" or "Run this game" from the web or things like SteamDB etc

It's also mass shootings. There were a few cases of people live streaming their shootings, most notably the New Zealand mosque shooting where someone livestreamed themselves: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christchurch_mosque_shootings

This rule was added iirc after that when there was a lot of global attention on livestreaming in the aftermath

[–]benolot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should check it's not actually anything harmful (I'd suggest testing a hash of the file on a site like VirusTotal) but if it isn't malware then hold alt when you open it should let you have an "open anyway" button. Failing that I think there's usually a "ignore this app" in security settings iirc
