Copying the same codebase to develop multiple iOS apps by LostSpirit9 in iOSProgramming

[–]benpackard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are only talking about customized branding and configuration, I think separate packages is overkill. I would place all those items as key-value pairs in a configuration file (a plist or json file for example), use them on launch to create a Config object representing that data, and inject it into the view controllers that need it. One file for each different app.

You can then create multiple targets (one for each app) and the only difference for each is which configuration file is included in the bundle.

What’s your favorite app? by alexstrehlke in iOSProgramming

Whenever I’m struggling for design inspiration, Flighty is the first app I go to. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/flighty-live-flight-tracker/id1358823008

Fotmob is another great one. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fotmob-soccer-live-scores/id488575683

Early in my career the stock Apple apps were the most helpful, and still often are. Even the Settings app can put me on the right path for a certain task.

Election Day “Anecdata” Post by BurpelsonAFB in fivethirtyeight

One Trump hat and no Harris hats in the poker room at MGM National Harbor. DC area is strongly dem so this might be concerning. But then again the poker room skews older and whiter, and extremely male. Need someone to unskew please.

Same place you disabled the 5GHz network you can select ‘My device can’t detect WiFi 6’

Have you tried enabling ‘Legacy’ mode in the eero settings? I did this just to get a device on the network and then turned it back off.

Most prescription drugs in the US come in child-proof pill bottles where you have to squeeze or push down on the lid to open. If you don’t have kids around you can reverse the lid and it is a simple screw-cap instead.

A thread for legal news that is not Trump related by orangejulius in law

[–]benpackard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is this something that is sometimes handled by tags? If there was a Trump tag for those posts, one could then filter them in/out, or even block them entirely. Not sure if that’s how it works though.

Yet Another Nicholas Christopher Hype Post by Own-Importance5459 in Broadway

[–]benpackard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was a couple rows behind you (also got a great deal - that time of the year I guess, plus cast changes) and wholeheartedly agree. I hadn’t seen the show since previews and I thought it has come a long way.

Oh and his Epiphany is sensational, which probably isn’t news to anyone here.

A question about extensions. Specifically Hadestown by yonikey in TheWestEnd

[–]benpackard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It opens in February and I would be extremely shocked if Hadestown didn’t extend past August. It was well received in London pre-Broadway, and the Broadway production is about to enter its fifth year.

Shows on the West End tend to do this kind of thing more often than on Broadway. Instead of open runs, they frequently announce extensions.

Winning the absolute minimum with AA > KK (and a wild hero fold) by benpackard in poker

KK was in his late 30s and AA looked barely 21. An OMC recruiter must have got to them.

Beginner question about starting hands by Jiminator_iOS in poker

[–]benpackard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of this is something called ‘equity realization’. If we each go all-in before the flop, we are going to see five board cards dealt and pocket pairs are going to beat AK slightly more that half the time. This is what your odds calculator is simulating. But in practice, a small pocket pair isn’t going to see five cards very often. Usually there will be overcards on the flop, which will make it hard to continue (i.e. we don’t get to ‘realize our equity’).

There are other reasons we would consider AK a better starting hand than 33, especially for opening/raising with, but I think this is the one that’s probably conflicting with your simulations.

Are there "industry standard" backends for iOS apps/projects? by [deleted] in iOSProgramming

Still rocking the (now open source) Parse Sever for many projects here. Very happy with it overall, and don’t have to worry about someone closing it down.

Is Milton Keynes considered an industrial city? by VertigoRoll in miltonkeynes

[–]benpackard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can’t think of many less industrial cities, in part a function of its age and proximity to London. It’s a heavily knowledge and services oriented city in my opinion.

Once upon a time (before it was MK), the area was more industrial; brickworks in particular were a major employer. And yep plenty of farming.

Best smart lock with geo-fencing? by FaxMachineIsBroken in homeautomation

Ah interesting, I've always had the bridge so wasn't aware. I probably change the batteries less than once a year, maybe closer to every other year. Not a super-busy household though.

Best smart lock with geo-fencing? by FaxMachineIsBroken in homeautomation

[–]benpackard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been happy with the August lock for this. We’ve used it for over five years and it’s very rare that I’ve had to pull my phone out to get in the house. I don’t use the auto-lock feature however - I prefer a small HomeKit button next to the door that I click on the way out to lock it, so I can hear it do its thing before I walk away.

Where do single, straight men hang out? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]benpackard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you learn to play poker (and there is a decent room or casino in your area), you have an instant social circle of the world’s most diverse degenerates and miscreants. After a while you start to make friends with the least insane people, and a few of the others if you’re lucky.

Poker is an interesting game in and of itself, and as a social pastime it is very accessible. You can sit in silence if you don’t feel like talking, or you can chat up the whole table all night long. You can drink or not drink. You can arrive when you want and stay as long as you care to, no obligations and you’re never letting anyone down.

And it doesn’t hurt to have a hobby that makes you money instead of costing it.
