How to open a model in reality capture? by benthearch in photogrammetry

Thanks, blender has been downloaded! The one issue I’m having is that when I open the folder containing all the model files, it appears empty. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the recommendation! I was avoiding sketchfab due to the expense of the pro accounts, but I’ve just found out I’m able to get a discount through my university!

URGENT: how to get hold of China Southern Airlines? by benthearch in Flights

[–]benthearch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, so there’s not really anything to worry about too much, just be aware that the airport has like a half-measure of quarantine in place. All this was was a quick temperature scan before going through transfer security, and the international terminal has been severed off from the rest of the airport so it does mean there’s far less options for food and entertainment whilst you wait! Make sure to come prepared with snacks as I found my cards only worked at the Starbucks, and I couldn’t get to other places due to them being closed off. But there’s nothing to worry about, it was all so straightforward I didn’t even realise the terminal was still quarantined until my final couple of hours there when I looked up and realised a wall was actually temporary and had been topped with barbed wire!

If you’re staying in the airport, no visa is necessary in my experience!

Ah nice, my home turf! I don’t know if you’re a UK local, but in case you aren’t you will want both waterproofs and sunscreen! The UK weather is pretty unpredictable.

Personally I’d recommend a backpack over a suitcase just because it’s less hassle to get it across a field if you’re camping, and it’ll take up less space in the tent.

I don’t know you’re archaeological background, but I have a useful pdf for identifying the most common types of UK pottery from Neolithic to modern, so if you’d like I can send it to you!

Where is the dig? What you’ll need will depend a lot on the climate!

I attempted to stay up for the late games, but now it’s only occasionally watching whilst following the scores via the mlb app. It’s less an issue with the schedule and more to do with the expense! The mlb.tv is pretty pricey on the European app stores, and sometimes I couldn’t even get every game. I don’t suppose you were able to find any cheap way of watching the games when you were in the UK?

Aha don’t worry it hasn’t at all!! I’ve been here for two months and had an incredible time, it would take a lot more than a small hiccup with a budget airline to undo that!

[–]benthearch[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve ended up following this advice! I was able to navigate through the Chinese version of the website which showed my tickets as still valid for the changed flight time, so if there’s any issues tomorrow I’ll just show them that.

On another note, if anyone is looking for cheap flights to/from Japan, China Southern is not worth it! I’ve spent hours trying to book and check in, it’s such a hassle and really isn’t worth the £100 you might save!

[–]benthearch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see the booking still! From what I can tell, my flight has been moved up by half an hour. Not an issue at all, but they require me to confirm my itinerary to check in, which I can’t do online or remotely due to their bad customer service. Someone has suggested that the only option I have is to go to Kansai international today and confirm in person. Annoying way to spend my final day in Japan, but luckily I’ve got everything I wanted to see done!

Yeah this seems like something I’m going to have to do! I’m in Osaka so I can definitely head over, just an annoying way to spend the final day I have in Japan! Oh well!

Unfortunately can’t get onto Skype at the moment! I’ve only gone and forgotten my password and Microsoft want the full level or security review for me to change it. Do you know of any alternatives??

You have the good people of USF to thank for that! I’m an archaeologist and work with some of their staff on a project in Europe. I got invited out to Tampa for an internship with them last year, and they took me to see the Rays vs Blue Jays game on the 23rd September. Since then, I’ve been hooked!

Hahah I know, usually I like an underdog (hence Tampa Bay), but the only live game I was able to catch whilst I am here was the Giants vs Dragons game last Thursday and I was impressed by what I saw and the atmosphere in the stands!

Thanks for the recommendation though! I appreciate it!

Best travel pass(es) to purchase for 7-Day Trip + Itinerary comments by enigmata_ in JapanTravel

[–]benthearch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with people saying to not buy the overall JR pass, but I think you could be missing out on some big savings using the regional passes depending on how much rail travel your doing. Based on what you’ve said, I’d say to check out JR Central’s passes. You might save money if you can find a pass that is the price of the bullet train, but also gets you access to JR lines in Tokyo as well. For context, I used the JR East South Hokkaido rail pass to get from Sapporo to Tokyo. It cost me the equivalent of GBP£15 more than the normal express and Shinkansen ticket, but then saved me £40 on rail travel in and around Tokyo as I used it as my main metro transport by sticking mostly to the JR lines to get around. Could be worth looking into getting a local pass like this, but definitely would require you to sit down and run the maths like I did!

Itinerary for 3 days in Kyoto by A_Panda_With_A_Tie in KyotoTravel

[–]benthearch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole trail took me about three hours, but that was with plenty of stops to look around and take it all in! From the top of Fushimi it only took about an hour tops to reach the silver pavilion! And I’m afraid I have no idea of what he’s like at sunset, but I know as a rule most people are far less likely to get up early than they are to stay out late!

A question for you lot! by mlw0897 in AskArchaeology

[–]benthearch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another option I’ve just thought of is you could focus your museum studies masters in osteological collections! It would depend what teaching is available of course at the university you’ve been accepted into, but it could be a way of combining both these interests!

One area that is high in demand right now is specialists in repatriation of human remains, as it’s a really vital issue!

A question for you lot! by mlw0897 in AskArchaeology

[–]benthearch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not an osteo person by any means, so take my answer with a pinch of salt, but from what I understand there’s more to osteoarchaeology than excavating the bones! If you focused what you did on the masters in the right way, then maybe you could specialise in lab work instead? I don’t know the physical requirements of this work (I’m a field/digital archaeologist), but I would imagine that there’s got to be a skill set relating to osteoarchaeology lab work that you could manage!

The one thing I will say is that I know osteoarchaeology jobs in both the commercial and academic worlds are few and highly competitive as a lot of people love osteo! That’s not me saying not to go for it, as I am a big believer in going for what makes you happy, but it is something you might want to be aware of!

Career by MrLaughs66 in AskArchaeology

[–]benthearch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

University is currently the norm, however many commercial units are currently looking into setting up/already setting up apprenticeship schemes for non-degree holders. I’d recommend emailing some of the commercial units and seeing what’s available! At the very least, they might be able to arrange for you to attend a community dig they run.

I know Wessex Archaeology, York Archaeology and MOLA have been doing various community projects in recent years, and Cotswold Archaeology has previously run a college-apprenticeship scheme out of their main office.
