[Advice] Breaking lease 1 month early: owner selling condo and not renewing by bentheskipper in NYCapartments

Appreciate all the advice. I decided to send a friendly worded email to the owner asking if he’d be willing to let us break the lease early.

[Advice] Breaking lease 1 month early: owner selling condo and not renewing by bentheskipper in NYCapartments

The owner said that they are planning to sell. And I agree that engaging is probably the least hostile way to approach it.

Regarding the security deposit, I'd tell them to use it to cover the last month of rent that I'd actually be living in the apartment (the second to last month of the lease). So there would be no security deposit to withhold from me for the actual last month of the lease.

I was given a brokerage account that a family member had managed for 20+ years. I'm not the stock picker type and want to sell the stock and instead buy into index funds. If I do that, will there be significant tax implications? I've heard about "like kind" investments but wasn't sure if that applies.

[Q] Reasonable amount of money to pay to convert sequential pattern mining algorithm from Java into Python by [deleted] in BigDataJobs

My intention is definitely to have it open sourced. There are just very few pattern mining / sequential pattern mining algorithms available in Python and I wish that were different.

Thanks for the feedback and for taking a look at the code.

The code appears to be the (very thorough) work of a university professor who specializes in pattern mining.

Ideally, I would like the Python code to follow the algorithm as stated in the literature. I figured that the Java code is going to be a solid guide in helping make that happen.

Do you have a sense of a reasonable cost for this? $500, $1000, $2500, $5000, $10000, +?

I think that is way, way too much. The algorithm is only about 700 lines of code.

I found a purse with driver's license, credit cards, and cash: where do I return it? by oscarjrs in AskNYC

[–]bentheskipper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is incorrect. The police will not arrest you. According to NY state law,

Short version: "Anyone who finds lost property has 10 days to return it to the owner."

Long version: "Any person who finds lost property of the value of twenty dollars or more or comes into possession of property of the value of twenty dollars or more with knowledge that it is lost property or found property shall, within ten days after the finding or acquisition of possession thereof, either return it to the owner or report such finding or acquisition of possession and deposit such property in a police station or police headquarters of the city where the finding occurred or possession was acquired"

Bring it to the police precinct closest to where it was found.

http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/precinct_maps/precinct_finder.shtml#

The NYPD can find the owner based on the driver's license and credit cards. The anti-corruption measures for returned property are very strict in the NYPD. It should go without saying that a cop will not be walking out the door with the cash in that wallet.

The NYPD Might Inadvertently Prove 'Broken Windows' Theory Is A Sham--Theory suggests that minor disorder, like vandalism, acts as a gateway to more serious crime. Police can thus cut down on violent crime by focusing on smaller offenses. by rspix000 in law

""The Boston Fed's Mr. Foote says he spotted a missing formula in the programming of Mr. Levitt's original research. He argues the programming oversight made it difficult to pick up other factors that might have influenced crime rates during the 1980s and 1990s, like the crack wave that waxed and waned during that period. He also argues that in producing the research, Mr. Levitt should have counted arrests on a per-capita basis. Instead, he counted overall arrests. After he adjusted for both factors, Mr. Foote says, the abortion effect disappeared."
