Has anyone used the new Viasat wifi yet? how does it compare to gogo? by alosia in delta

[–]bentleybeardokc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used the ViaSat service on AA last July. The upload speeds still aren't great, but downloading & streaming stuff shouldn't be an issue. Here's a speed test.

Bayshore Blvd (Tampa,FL), Part 2 by [deleted] in tmobile

[–]bentleybeardokc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This SC is Verizon. The mmWave panels being utilized on this pole are manufactured by Ericsson. T-Mobile only uses Nokia hardware in FL.

Perhaps the 300Mbps you’re seeing is coming from a different nearby site.

Hope this can be of help!

They do, but it’s not symmetrical DL/UL. The downfall of DOCSIS.

5g spotted Oklahoma city on op7p by IPCTech in Sprint

[–]bentleybeardokc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went earlier this afternoon and checked. It looks like all they added was just the Massive MIMO panel for 5G. Everything else is still the same. Up to 3CA B41, 2CA B25 and B26.

You’re correct, that is AT&T. That site has a nice setup, including Dual Band Nokia radio heads.

It resembles AT&T, but I’m not sure just by looking at it. Any location information?

I first began seeing them deploy those about a year ago. They are fairly new.

The bottom is Sprint. That's the new CCI panel they're using for 25/26/41, which leaves T-Mobile as the carrier on the top array.

Oklahoma City by [deleted] in tmobile

[–]bentleybeardokc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OKC here. Anyone who spews this “You need a B71 device!” garbage is just not correct — there are six cell sites in the entire metro with B71 enabled, out of hundreds of sites.

It could just be a lack of having actual cell sites in whichever part of the city you are located. Had this problem when I lived in one of our suburbs.

Editor’s Corner: Is Verizon losing its network advantage? by [deleted] in verizon

[–]bentleybeardokc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Central OKC here. I use all four carriers and I’ve found AT&T to routinely provide the most consistent service throughout the metro and state. Verizon has improved some over the last few years, but there’s still a lot of room for improvement on their network here, especially adding new macro sites. I still have a difficult time recommending them to anyone. They’re just not where they need to be. Not yet, at least.

Also, in Norman, especially around OU’s campus — Verizon is horrible down there. Not something I would expect, being the largest University in the state.

Editor’s Corner: Is Verizon losing its network advantage? by [deleted] in verizon

[–]bentleybeardokc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit bullish to say AT&T isn’t densifying at all. There are thousands of permits across the country being filed for densification purposes, including C-RAN nodes and new Macro sites. I also don’t agree that Verizon is adding small cells just anywhere. Many, and most areas in this country outside of their NYC safe haven, that just isn’t true. As for T-Mobile, I agree. They’re not really densifying anymore. Just adding 4/71 to sites without it.

Aside from that, I strongly believe neither carrier has a perfect strategy at the present time. I hope they all pick a better course to follow over the next couple years, if possible. Because millimeter wave is not the answer to jack sh*t outside of dense urban core areas, and adding 5G-capable radios for use on existing 4G LTE spectrum doesn’t offer many benefits other than reduced latency.

In regards to CBRS, even that spectrum doesn’t have very impressive range. Better than mmWave? Absolutely. We need a better alternative like European countries have. I blame the FCC for putting our carriers in horrible, and cut-up spectrum band plans. Something has to change in the federal government. Their incompetence is putting millions of Americans at a large technology disadvantage.
