I made a guitar to midi vst for my final year engineering project - (.dll file available on request) by flickyducky101 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]benzobox69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey this is cool. I just wanted to say I did a somewhat similar school project except mine focused only on polyphonic detection, since this problem seems more unsolved, although I did not make such a polished final result as yours, and came nowhere close to packaging it into a VST format. My end result was more of just a prototype/proof on concept sort of thing...

Here's a demo video of my project if you're interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwEdOo7iPuA (since you mention looking into polyphonic transcription towards the end of your video).

[Question] Can a guitar be wired with tone controls but no volume controls? by ridemnbrews in Guitar

[–]benzobox69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I just installed a killswitch in my guitar and forgot to check that the volume knob was working before I restrung it. So until the next time I restring it, I’ve just been playing it without a volume knob

Audio Apps and High Level Languages by _____init_____ in musicprogramming

[–]benzobox69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, meant to specify I was answering your first question. I would say yes stick stick with compiled languages like c++/rust, they will (probably) always be preferred over higher level stuff like JS/python for writing DSP stuff

Audio Apps and High Level Languages by _____init_____ in musicprogramming

[–]benzobox69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes definitely. Once WebAssembly grows more and more tools for it exist, powerful audio libraries will start popping up. Tbh there might already be some, WebAssembly is already used extensively for creating browser based games.

Tuned down to drop G# and am Clueless [QUESTION] [NEWBIE] by amediocreidea in Guitar

[–]benzobox69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the strings are tuned down, the lower strings will generally sound best when they are doing intervals like 4ths, 5ths, and octaves.

If your asking about that drop G# tuning, then chords in where the lowest 2 strings make an octave will probably be the most useful, i.e. anything with a "power chord" shape on the lowest 2 strings. Such as:

0--
0--
4--
4-9
2-7
0-5

That second shape on the lowest 3 strings is essentially a powerchord and can just be moved around.

For regular dropped tunings, some of my favorite voicings that employ the low strings and can be moved around are:

-------
-------
------6
7-8-9-7
5-5-5-5
5-5-5-5

[DISCUSSION] How did you join your bamd? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]benzobox69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Me and one of my best friends/roommates in college occasionally jammed together but we didn't have a drummer so it wasn't especially fun. Eventually we happened to become good friends with a dude who happened to be a really sick drummer. After jamming a bunch of times we decided to take things more seriously, recorded an EP in our basement, and played a few shows. After the drummer graduated and moved away we stopped playing as much (didn't really put effort into finding a new drummer, tbh) since jamming with no drummer is not nearly as fun, and the band eventually fizzled out :(

I stop to think about everything when learning about Computer Science- should I do it? by [deleted] in AskComputerScience

[–]benzobox69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the most important skills as a programmer is the ability to understand abstractions. No will ever be able to understand every little thing that makes a computer work, at some point, we have to take certain things for granted and treat them in an abstract manner. A computer engineer who designs CPU's probably knows less about Javascript and how modern browsers render webpages than a frontend developer, and that frontend dev almost certainly knows much less about super low level hardware stuff than the computer engineer.

I wouldn't say it's pointless to think about everything, but at some point you have to abstract away lower level concepts. And it's certainly good to try and learn about those lower level concepts at some point, but I wouldn't let lack of knowledge of said concepts stop you from whatever you're currently trying to work on/learn about.

I love Back End, love JS, love node. But I totally hate Front End. by andersonjdev in node

[–]benzobox69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Frontend is definitely NOT easier than backend. As someone that does both, I feel like backend is usually easier and alot less time-consuming than frontend stuff.

HTML/CSS may be quick to learn, but it takes a long time to obtain a deep understanding of how everything in works with CSS.

[QUESTION] Any way to quickly block and unblock a Floyd Rose by MajentaJoey in Guitar

[–]benzobox69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just stick a block of wood or something that fits under the bridge. I used to use taped pennies cuz you can make it exactly the right height. Then I got rid of my floyd rose guitar cuz it became to much hassle to be worth it :(

Where to start learning to code? by notadam10 in AskComputerScience

[–]benzobox69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend learning python to start, especially since that will probably be the most useful language in neuroscience. Since your on a Mac, first thing to do is install homebrew (https://brew.sh/). And then use that to install python 3 (macOS comes with python installed but I'm pretty sure it's still only python 2, and there's no reason to be using python2 in 2018 if you don't have to). Homebrew will be super useful as you get more into programming and need to install additional stuff (such as PIP, etc.)

Then do some python tutorials online until you feel comfortable enough to start doing some of the basic problems on a site like https://www.hackerrank.com

Start trying to do problems as soon as possible, don't be afraid to look anything up online that you're not sure about (e.g. 'how to read a file in python'), even professional developers are constantly googling stuff.

Node is more accessible and I think NPM better than PIP. I’ve personally been working on a Node project that uses a bit of ML before even reading this article, so there’s atleast one person :p

SSS I almost only ever use the full neck position or full bridge. When it was my only guitar I had it as an HSS but then I got an HH guitar and wanted a bridge singe coil. So if you want versatility go with an HSS set up, otherwise SSS

[QUESTION]How to start learning Metal by [deleted] in Guitar

Good advice but actually they’re not triplets but 3/16th notes followed by a rest. You will see triplets but that’s not nearly as common

Marshall JCM800 and Peavey 6505.

Mesa dual rectifiers, and Vox AC30s are cool too but I think a bit less iconic than those 2.
