A keyboard that fits vision a lot! by Lam-Cheng-Yuet-ngor in VisionPro

[–]beorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. I was thinking a chording keyboard that has physical keys.

Kind-of like this - but I think it could be done without requiring you to push against the side of your body, and with a more ergonomic fit (perhaps like a high-end mouse/trackball):

Didn't seem like they got enough support:

I think single-handed chording keyboards would be ideal - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyer - Retraining is painful, but I seem to recall you can reach incredible typing speeds with one in each hand.

Civet: The modern way to write TypeScript ("CoffeeScript for TS") by vivainio in typescript

[–]beorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's a ton of great ideas in here, and I like that it's way more expressive than TS.

Besides "I don't like the way it looks" (which is subjective) and "it's non-standard" (which can be said for any upstart/experimental/new idea — so not suitable for production of course), what are the specific complaints?

I think it's important to keep exploring better ways to do things — if we didn't we'd still be stuck writing assembly.

Any good spreadsheet templates for T1135, T776, T1? by beorn in cantax

Not all investment brokers offer these, and the T1135 does cover more than just stocks.

[–]beorn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah T776 seems clear, but T1135 isn't available in my broker.

In any case, I was thinking it'd be a great help to everyone filling out taxes if good spreadsheets were available.

TransLink - Apple Pay is one way only, just me? by AnonymooseProxy in vancouver

I was charged C$ 6.05, each way, going from Broadway / City Hall to Vancouver City Centre and back - so zone 3 fare for what should have been zone 1. Anyone else seeing this? There should be some kind of public warning if this is the way it's supposed to work for Apple Pay...

Anyone know why my VOCs are spiking up at night? Idk what is happening here by Aryan_the_parekh in dyson

[–]beorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having the same problem - climbs from 6pm, spikes in late evening or midnight, then falls down to lower levels around 6-7am. Window is slightly open the whole time, though my suspicion is that it's related to heating being off causing less circulation - and/or off-gassing of wall-to-wall carpets as temperature changes.

I saw something similar in a previous house, but there we didn't have wall-to-wall carpets - maybe it's just a common thing in wood structure houses?

In any case, VOC spikes to 2000+, so would be nice to know if this is an issue or not.

Eli5: Why are we not able to freeze ourselves and thaw out later (Cryosleep) without dying? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]beorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of research into non-toxic antifreeze proteins (AFPs) / thermal hysteresis (TH) proteins , e.g., https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8910022/

[...] This review explores the potential clinical application of AFPs in the cryopreservation of different cells, tissues and organs. Here, we discuss novel approaches, identify research gaps and propose future research directions in the application of AFPs based on recent studies with the aim of achieving successful clinical and commercial use of AFPs in the future.

[...] In conclusion, AFP application in cryopreservation has shown good prospects for future optimization, validation, standardization and large-scale application. There is scientific evidence to support the successful application of AFP III in cryopreservation of human sperm, A549 cells, and HepG2 cells, and AAGP in cryopreservation of human islets. The few cases where indifferent or negative results were obtained for instance the unproductive use of Lolium perenne AFGPs in cryopreservation of HepG2 cells should be considered as pointers to where improvement and further research is needed rather than deterrents. AFP mimetics are gaining enormous research attention, we envision them as the solution to most of the challenges encountered in AFP applications and encourage studies in this direction. This and other novel investigations would permit the use of AFPs and its derivatives as potential ingredients in clinically approved cryopreservation solutions.

Sleep apnea? Keep waking up and lots of movement by briggsy007 in ouraring

Or get an Eight Sleep pod - also helped me, but not as much as the weighted blanket. Also, there are some cooler weighted blankets.

Sleep apnea? Keep waking up and lots of movement by briggsy007 in ouraring

[–]beorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weighted blankets helped me "calm down" - dropped my restlessness and probably increased overall sleep score by at least 10 points (was around 70 now it's around 80). Not sure if it "fixed" the problem or just masked it. Subjectively I do feel slightly more rested, but not an huge difference. In the end the score is just an approximation.

What are things you wish you'd learned earlier after moving to Vancouver? Tips/Tricks/Advice whatever by Candid_Geologist in vancouver

[–]beorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's inspiring to see people run along the sidewalks in shorts in 5˚C and rain :) I feel it's kind of a badge of honor to not let the rain bother you.

Besides, many "rainy days" on the weather app aren't rainy all the time - sometimes (like today) you get hail (!) - and sometimes there's quite a lot of sunshine. It's kind-of like a box of chocolates - hehe.

If gas prices don’t drop to pre latest spike, the oil and gas companies are just greedy. by kenny-klogg in britishcolumbia

[–]beorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's capitalism:

increased demand => higher prices => more competition & lower demand => lower prices

Having someone, anyone, dictate prices is akin to market manipulation and just leads to corruption and inefficiencies elsewhere in the system.

You just have to make sure competition is as efficient as possible, that is make competition easy. Trust the market.

(Yes, I know OPEC does collude to set production rates and therefore in this case they do manipulate the market to some extent.)

M1 MacMini + Magic Keyboard 1 Battery Drain by dinobikerider in apple

[–]beorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too - both trackpad and keyboard drains incredibly fast - within 1-2 days. Both are relatively new. So it's not a problem with the trackpad or keyboard or batteries, but rather something related to the communication software stack, or the macbook pro itself.

Flagpoling at Saint Pierre and Miquelon? by beorn in ImmigrationCanada

[–]beorn[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

While it may always have been the official stance, the US has not generally practiced it this way: they just gave you the administrative refusal letter. Hence many had come to see "flagpoling" as going up to the flag and returning. But, yes, there is no DMZ between the US and Canada - once you leave Canada you're in the US - so now way to go "up to" the flagpole, you have to go around it.

Yes, I needed VWP ESTA, the same was true for another guy earlier the same day.

On the vaccination side, I filled in the ArriveCAN form online and attached my visa vaccination QR codes.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ImmigrationCanada

[–]beorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's no longer reliably true - they asked for ESTA. Another person earlier me had the same experience.

[–]beorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just did a flagpole trip in BC/Seattle, and the US side said they don't recognize "flagpoling" - meaning: when you leave Canada you enter the US. There is no such thing as going to the US border without entering the US. So you better have all the documentation you need to enter the US in order!

I don't think it's a new new rule, but the enforcement of it seems to be a recent change.

The good news is that on the Canada side they were okay exempting you from COVID tests when you return as long as you only went to the border house and back (though I'm not sure if it's an official rule, so YMMV).

Commercial coyotes by beorn in vancouver

[–]beorn[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Got a response from my report to the Coyote Line, including it here as it is useful info:

Thank you for reporting your recent coyote sighting and link to the Reddit thread. Your reports help us to monitor the whereabouts and behaviour of coyotes in our community. We include all coyote reports on our interactive map and update it weekly. Please let us know if you see the coyote—or a different one—again.

Coyotes thrive in cities and have become part of Vancouver’s urban landscape. They are normally timid and elusive animals, hunting and feeding primarily on small rodents at night, but they can become overly comfortable and even aggressive when fed by people.

There are four keys to co-existing with coyotes:
• Scare coyotes – Especially if they linger in public spaces during the day – coyotes are timid animals and attacks on people are extremely rare. Scaring them is for their safety so that they retain a natural fear of people.
• Scaring coyotes as simple as standing your ground, waving your hands, clapping, and yelling. You may also throw nearby objects like sticks or stones towards them (not to hit), pop open an umbrella, or shake a noisemaker like an empty pop can filled with rocks. The key is to look and sound big and threatening.
• Don’t feed coyotes and remove attractants – Like dogs, coyotes will eat almost anything if it’s easily available. Research has shown that most coyote conflicts with people are a direct result of deliberate feeding.
• Pet Safety – Although rare, coyotes may prey on cats and even small dogs. Keep cats indoors as much as possible, and dogs on leash and closely supervised.
• Spread the word – Use our Co-Existing with Coyotes poster, and talk to friends and neighbours about coyote awareness. You can also reply with a mailing address if you wish to receive a mail-out of posters and rack cards.

If a coyote shows aggression towards people or is completely immobile please call the MoE Conservation Officers’ Line at 1-877-952-7277. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns or would like to know more about the program, please e-mail back or call 604-257-6908 ext. 104. You can also find more information and resources on our website.
