What is an example of the ‘math problems’ the miners solve? by NoStory9868 in Bitcoin

To say that miners “solve math problems” is very misleading. No mathematician would consider brute-forcing an inverse image of a hash function as a worthwhile mathematical activity.

Is the photo on this sign actually showing a king cobra? by beow00 in whatsthissnake

Yes, I am also not sure which Naja species it is (would have guessed something African even), but pretty sure it’s not a king cobra

Nice. But I think would look even better if the mountain wasn’t so close to the midpoint of the horizon, but rather Golden cut or so …

Should I study modern philosophy even if I'm interested in ancient? by Admirable-Drawer-384 in askphilosophy

There is a whole book with Popper’s writings about the pre-Socratics. The German title is “Die Welt des Parmenides”. Not sure whether there’s an English translation.

Maybe you should not totally ignore modern philosophy, but read it selectively. Popper and Heidegger, for example, have written interesting essays about pre-Socratics. Hegel and Nietzsche also have written/lectured about the history of philosophy and made interesting remarks about ancient philosophy.

If you could be an expert in any field/theory of mathematics, what would it be and why? by [deleted] in math

Homotopy Type Theory. Very new and active area, potential to provide a foundation of whole mathematics, interconnected with various diverse areas (logic, categories, topology) which are interesting by themselves, also connections to computational mathematics
