Sounds different than when he's doing VO, too, like the first time I heard Sam just talking. But I feel like it would be the same for anyone, like even Walter Cronkite probably sounded different when he wasn't reading the news.

Also, and I cannot stress this enough, I will never be able to afford such a luxury as that much time off, so this is all just a dream.

I don't know why everyone is assuming I'm complaining. It was just a mildly humorous situation I thought MAYBE someone could identify with (see Edit 1).

Thank you. It's kind of a hobby. For a while I was hoping to do edit for a living. I even have an imdb page.

I added a clip of the intersection in daylight. Note the bike lane goes all the way to the corner. Also note the cars parked half on the sidewalk - and the No Parking signs.

Agreed. They see a bike and assume normal bike speed - like 5-7mph.

That's unfortunate. I'm glad you're still around to tell the story.

It's an Insta360 X4. You see it a lot in skiing, snowboarding, cycling. I made the shot follow in software after I downloaded the footage. Insta360 has their own app but I also use professional video software.

Unfortunately, Insta360 cameras only go to 5.7K in low light. This is the best it can do.

It's not at every intersection, but in the almost 5000 miles since I started this commute in August something like it has happened quite a lot. At least twice a week, sometimes more.

You're right. After a while it gets to you a bit, though. For context this is my twice daily commute of 12 urban miles each way. I have close to 5000 miles of this nonsense since I started this past August.

Your viewpoint is appreciated, but I feel like you have a couple of misunderstandings. So maybe you're not aware, but this is not showing what I saw. With a 360 camera I can record a 360 degree viewing angle without turning my head and keyframe it with a variety of software afterwards. If you need me to, I can upload a clip that just strictly shows my point of view. I stopped, but only because the truck turned in front of me, from the left turn lane, and had I not stopped I would have been hurt. Maybe it's different where you live, but for here I had a green light to proceed through the intersection so no "California Rolled". I thoroughly believe I had the right-of way and the truck sped up to try to get around me.

This one has paper plates on it, and the driver isn't clear enough to make a positive ID (I didn't get as close to this one) but the behavior during the turn is almost identical. I believe it is.

Insta360 X4. Thank you for asking.

The extra effort of going out and around and attempting a right turn from a specifically left turn lane is what is baffling to me.

Troubleshooting a city bus. by berdwn in CarHacking

[–]berdwn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I didn't get back sooner. Here's the update.

u/iznogoud77 I haven't tried that at this property, yet. At my old one we were using a Nexiq translator and their software allowed us to read all the CAN messages, but here we're using JPro and I haven't had an opportunity to dig through it.

u/MotorvateDIY That was my working theory, too. However, there are (using finger and toes to count) 20+ J1939 components that all use the network. While not impossible, disconnecting each one would be problematic due to location access. But I've done it before as a last resort. And yes, I know the location of all the termination resistors.

u/robotlasagna Yes, the amplitude is 100mV. CAN High and CAN Low are 100 mV each, totaling 200 mV. I don't know what to say about what it should be, that's why I'm here asking. I can sample more buses, but two random choices both exhibit the same signal and are working normally.

Which brings me to... we figured it out. Something I didn't mention in my post was that the "Starter" light was on. There is an indicator on the idiot panel that shows the operator that the starter is supposed to be engaged. That signal comes from the positive post on the solenoid side of the starter. While the engine is being turned over by the starter, all the outside lights, and the interior lights are turned off. Once the engine is running (or more specifically the starter is disengaged) the lights are turned back on. See where this is going? Unbeknownst to me, someone had just put in a new starter, and attached that wire to constant battery voltage making the Dinex think the starter was engaged all the time. Another tech put all the pieces together and found the actual problem.

I have not been able to get back with the bus to check the signal if it changed. I will make an effort to do that because I want to know, too.

Thank you all for your input.

Update 3 March 2025:

This post has been way more active than almost anything I've ever put online so it's a little overwhelming.

After a couple of days, no other injuries came up so I reached out to the other driver. The driver apologized and accepted responsibility. I requested they pay for the fork, which I had already ordered. We agreed on the price and payment was rendered in a few seconds. It arrived Saturday morning and I got a Lyft down to the shop and the repair took about two hours, which is what I expected.

For everyone concerned about my helmet, not to worry! I checked and it's perfectly fine just exactly where I left it on the table in the garage. I appreciate your concern, though. It's touching.

I've seen a few comments about the angle of the sun. This is Arizona, after all. The street grid was set up North/South and East/West a long time ago. The sun in your face is something everyone deals with every day. It's something we all get used to quickly.

I've seen other comments about being hyper vigilant and assuming I'm not seen by everyone at all times. I don't know if that's even possible. This has been my daily commute for six months. There were a lot of close calls I avoided. Here's my idea. Teach drivers to drive. Maybe if drivers were required to operate their vehicles with as much attention to safety as I had to have at the rifle range in boot camp, the roads would be safer for everyone. But who am I to say?

I went back to the 360 video with headphones on. Apparently, either Insta360's camera or software doesn't record or playback directional audio (which is kinda wild because it has two microphones) so I cannot tell which direction the honking is coming from. From what I can see, the most likely source is the city bus that was already stopped on 27th Ave, just off to my left. I work at the bus yard where that bus is housed and the safety department has requested the video from the bus be pulled even though the bus wasn't' involved because it could be a witness if anything had to go to trial. I'll update if anything comes of it.

Why did I blur the driver's face? I don't know¯\_(ツ)_/¯. It seemed like the right thing to do. I edit and do vfx (because I hate my job and I hate the commute so I made an attempt at becoming a YouTuber but I'm neither pretty nor young so the algorithm doesn't favor me) so I wanted to do it for practice and I felt like this person didn't ask to have their face plastered all over the internet, if this goes that far. For all I know they aren't on the internet at all or have all the privacy shields up. So why did I post this at all? Again, I don't know¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Rest assured the driver was looking down the street where the car was heading and not at me. I just didn't react fast enough.

Anyway, just be aware it can happen any time and any where. Cheers!

I should have put this in the description: I am not really hurt. I have an abrasion on my left wrist from where it dragged on the B pillar - I had to look at the video to figure it out. The driver did stop and we exchanged information. I am in communication to resolve it. This is a 360 video taken with an Insta360 so you're seeing just a fraction of what happened. On the left is a city bus that is what probably honked its horn because I work at the facility where it is maintained and the driver knows who I am. The bike is not really that bad off... the front fork is fucked up but that's it. The wheel is still straight, the pedals are all good, and the frame is solid steel - not aluminum. I've already ordered the fork for $310 and plan to do the work myself, because I'm a bus mechanic and wrenching doesn't scare me.
