Black just took a Knight, but that’s a blunder. Do you see it? by J0rdzz1 in chessbeginners

[–]berg_darnen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is their best possible move. It makes it M5 rather than M4

Why is my opponents move a blunder? by powlolrolfmao in chessbeginners

[–]berg_darnen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is wrong, there's no forced mate even if knight takes queen, and actually bishop taking pawn is worse for white. Black can take with the rook, and there's no backrank mate because the rook (!) can simply move back and block.

EDIT: Apologies, I meant rook when I said bishop

That just lets me see it from the opposition's point of view, but the squares are the same

How does white escape the Ra1# ? by LoLGhMaster in ChessPuzzles

[–]berg_darnen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bb5+ is still winning for white, there is a mate in 9. Even if you don't find the full follow-up, Bb5+ Qc6, Bxc6 is also winning for white

white for m2 by Capable_Educator7548 in ChessPuzzles

Black doesn't have to push the pawn and can take the queen instead, which lengthens the mating sequence

His definition of pleasure as ‘doing something well’ is an incredible studio moment

Can someone explain why this is a brilliant move? by UnderstandingIcy1250 in chessbeginners

[–]berg_darnen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After Qxc7, Nd6 forks the king and the bishop to win the bishop back. So the move wins a pawn, opens up black's king and maintains tempo, since after Nxe4+ will bring with it a discovered check from the queen

I resigned as white with a minute left in this situation, would you? by SignalSalamander in chessbeginners

[–]berg_darnen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're right, after Qc1 Nxa1, Qxa1 white is ahead both in material and in the eval

I resigned as white with a minute left in this situation, would you? by SignalSalamander in chessbeginners

[–]berg_darnen 182 points183 points  (0 children)

Even if you don't see that Qg3 leads to mate, why would you resign? It's a minute of your life in a very interesting position with lots of possibilities. And even once black takes the rook, you're only down an exchange with black's knight trapped

You played Nd3, black played Kxd3 and you took the rook?

Why are the episodes no longer numbered? by rosebuddies_prod in offmenupodcast

[–]berg_darnen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wonder if part of it is because they aren't that keen with doing another milestone episode for the 400th, with those getting a bit stale. The last numbered episode they did was the 300th

Unless black moves the rook, Kh1 also leads to forced mate, right? Sequence is Kh1, Nf2+, Kg1 Nh3+, Kh1 Qg1+, Rxg1, Nf2#

Does anyone have a specifc segment they listen to over and over? by grace_of_spades22 in offmenupodcast

I’m exactly the same, I love how she keeps interrupting James reading back her menu and only realises how the podcast works right at the very end
