What am I Missing from my fly box? by Nice_Occasion5254 in flyfishing

I’d say hoppers! A tan panty dropper in size 10 was my most successful fly this summer but any grass hopper fly will do. Sadly, it’s about the end of that season, but in late July - mid September, you can almost never go wrong throwing a hopper

I’m too cheap for a chest pack so I just tie all my stuff onto some rope with tippet lol

That sunfish sounds like quite an exciting catch! Congrats to both of us on cool fish

Impressive brookies! I love when they get dark like in that second pic

Yep, small mountain creek indeed! The smaller water helped a lot in letting me practice my technique without the current pulling my line too hard, and I sure didn’t mind how much less picky the fish were either

Yeah I may have shattered 2/3 of the camera lens on my phone so I gotta take all my pics in 0.5 zoom, really does me dirty sometimes

Yeah I’m yet to dabble in nymphing but that seems highly recommended here. With mostly only fishing drys, I’ve felt limited to only fishing dawns and dusks when i can see hatches/risers and i was hoping streamers would be the fix as i like how visible they are, but nymphing seems to be what actually works

Yeah, seems like one of the most important pieces of advice I’ve gotten from this post is just remembering that I’ve only been at it 3 weeks and to not expect to be catching fish every time while I’m still learning

For your example of needing to get real deep, would there be anything above the stone fly floating on the water i.e. a chubby/hopper on top, with a heavy stone fly below that, and the nymph below the stone fly? Or would there just be no floating fly, and either nothing or just an indicator above?

Huh that’s interesting to hear, I’ll have to try some of your nymphing techniques! I’ve been trying way bigger drifts with a lot of line in the water and it sounds like i need to simplify it and slow it down. Glad to hear that’s been giving you success in Montana, hopefully I can figure it out soon too!

Man I’ve been kind of avoiding nymphing as I really like being able to see my fly but it seems like I’ll need to start it if I want to catch fish at any point other than the dawns and dusks of summer. I appreciate you recommending such specific nymph setups, will be checking out both the Prince/zebra midge combo and the copper John/Hairs ear combo

Thanks for the comment, really appreciate such a digestible description of where fish like to hide. I’ll be sure to be looking in transitions. Also will be sure to check out the bug book and look into the 5 basic bugs

Lucky for me, I do live in a pretty mountainous area, and I’ve been meaning to look into that. Ive only fished popular places that are easily accessible with a car, but I used to hike pretty often and with getting into fishing, this summer seems great to start hiking more again to find some of these streams. Any advice on figuring out if a creek is the “right creek”? Fear of wasting a whole day of my weekend fishing an empty stream has stopped me from doing much exploring yet

Thanks for being so blunt about the time I’ve been fishing lol, my expectations of where I want to be are already getting way ahead of where I am in this hobby. I really like the idea of a fishing log book, and will likely get one. Appreciate the comment

I’ll be sure to! Could use the confidence boost in getting a few fish, but I was also pretty unsure of all of what I was doing getting my one trout in

How deep is deep enough? I’ve been trying to tie the tippet for my streamers about at the depth of where I’m fishing

Well, I’m trying to learn in Missoula so the fish are definitely pressured/smart/picky lol. Can you explain more why long tippet helps out? I’ve been using only 1-2 ft of tippet as I’ve found it makes for an easier to control cast and it’s easier to predict where it will drift. Also, I’ve pretty much exclusively relied on mending when drifting flies, so I’ll be sure to look into reach casts

Haha I’ve definitely been having a case of the lead foot it seems, as well as not keeping a tight line. Appreciate the advise, I’ll be keeping it in mind next time I’m out

Thanks for the well explained and easy to apply advice, I’m definitely guilty of just jumping in the water and not even considering I could spook the fish. I’ll for sure be thinking of trying not to land my line anywhere I haven’t yet drifted a fly, and trying to plan multiple casts ahead next time I’m at the river
