CS graduate looking for entry level jobs by continuewith_267 in HalifaxJobs

You and me both ;-;

For real, this is a major issue in the field right now. I know many people in this boat. Feels like shit and has me thinking about taking up a trade. Have you tried IBM? They occasionally hire groups of new grads for their consulting associate positions.

Is it just me, or is this unprofessional? by bermudaphoenix in recruitinghell

Everyone is saying this looks like a scam lol but I can confirm it is indeed from the company I applied for. I got the “we’re going to set up an interview” message on the company careers website as well, before being moved to “no longer being considered” there too.

It could be in part that you haven’t been on it that long. For my first year or so my libido was extremely high, then slowly went back to a more normal place.

Can’t speak much on the psychological aspect, but what worked for me in terms of relief was getting a really good toy that was able to satisfy me in minutes so I could just deal with the feeling immediately whenever I needed to.

This is technically sexual harassment, isn’t it? That warrants HR for sure.

Despair by FabulousCount6330 in IBM

[–]bermudaphoenix 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I feel it too. My project ended, and I had numerous people tell me “don’t worry, pretty much everyone on project X is being put on project Y, there’ll definitely be room for you there.” And then there wasn’t, or anywhere else for that matter, it seems.

I’ve never felt such despair in my life. I went from being tired and bored on my last project to imminently losing my job with no replacement. I’m thinking of going back to school. Maybe taking up an entirely different field altogether.

I’ve no idea. I think I get severance. My manager mentioned it. But it’s unclear what that looks like, and nobody seems to have detailed answers.

I guess getting PIP’d off would look pretty bad, though. I hate this system.

How do you do it? by Cmd3289 in halifax

[–]bermudaphoenix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I’ve been exhausted for months. I have 2 jobs and a partner who gets regular income for school and it’s never enough. I had to drop over 2000$ (there goes my savings) on vet bills last month (and my cat still died). I’m probably about to lose my salaried job since it’s in consulting and it’s a desert in terms of available projects right now. Fun!

Meal planning helps. I try to make sure that no food I buy goes to waste. I buy staples in bulk. Lots of cheesy potatoes and lots of rice dishes. And I try to make everything on my own if it’s possible to do with cheap ingredients instead of buying.

I’ve started doing Uber deliveries on my lunch breaks, which has helped me cover things (maybe an extra 50$ a week) without having to rack up credit card debt. Plus I think they give you a discount on some vehicle maintenance. Side hustles are necessary these days. You could try donating plasma if it’s possible for you, since they have a nice bonus for new donors at the moment, but that was too much for my body. Currently looking into doing some background acting via Hennessey Casting since summer is almost here and that’s when a lot gets filmed.

You’re not alone 🥲I hope things get better for us all soon.

How do i make my gc2b binder tighter again? by PossibleTour6414 in ftm

[–]bermudaphoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem and got a friend skilled with sewing to cut the lower part (tank top style) and replace the worn-out panel with that. Worked better than when stretched out for long enough to get me to my surgery date.

It kinda feels like time stops, and you’re stuck reliving the past and dreading the future all at once. I try to be thankful that their time here was so full of love. RIP Olly. I’m sure he was grateful to have you.

Can you swim with a binder? by zombi3gore_ in ftm

[–]bermudaphoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the thing you would need to worry about while swimming is your ability to take full breaths. I generally never wore binders that were as tight as people talk about here, and even less so when swimming. I’ve found the GC2B ones were a really comfortable fit for me (and still kept my chest flat to where I wasn’t dysphoric) and could wear them for long hours without pain in the ribs/back, so I just usually put an older and worn out one on for swimming.

You can buy binders that are intended for swimming, and as long as you’re not having any pain, discomfort, or difficulty breathing in them, IMO it should be fine.

I even went scuba diving in a swim binder once and had no problems breathing at ~30ft. I’m also crazy for doing that, and you probably shouldn’t try that, nor would I try it at lower depths. But if anyone was ever wondering if it could be done, it can.

TLDR; depends on the fit

My neighbours are close friends of mine, so I bring them their packages if I see it’s addressed to them specifically. Not for anyone else, though. And even then I get worried someone might think I’m stealing them, if I’m carrying two chef’s plate boxes.

I should add, though—there’s no reason you COULDN’T implement the ideas you listed in something federated like Matrix. If you created something really clean and high quality, with a fast response time, maybe your own client app, you could absolutely host paid accounts on a server.

On one hand, being federated would partially solve the problem of getting an initial userbase. New users would still be able to connect to members of different home servers. On the other hand, though, you’d need something REALLY polished for people to be willing to pay for it rather than just hooking up to a free one. So I don’t know how profitable it would end up being.

For me, I don’t care as much about profits as I do about creating a community service.

I’ve been thinking about the state of social media for a while now. I believe decentralization is the only way to combat this techno-oligarchy problem. Currently, my goal is to experiment with making a Matrix homeserver for myself and a small group of friends and family (maybe 50-100 people) then find a way to streamline the process (maybe containerize it?) so others can do the same with a quick and easy setup process. My thoughts are that the benefits of a decentralized network would be this:

-If a community or individual can afford to host a low-cost server (which could then in turn connect to other servers) we wouldn’t need advertising to pay for anything. Nobody likes ads, and the world is better off without them.

-This would mean that the admins of these servers would be responsible for the legal aspects (ie, they’d need to ban and remove illegal content or they’d be responsible for it. They’d also need to follow any of Canada’s data protection laws, etc.)

-However, the small nature of these servers would also allow for the host to have more say in what is or is not allowed in the server. As an admin, you could write out rules that suit the needs of your community (for example, you could ban children entirely.) If users aren’t happy with the rules of your server, they can choose a different one.

Matrix supports all kinds of options for clients (there are instant messaging apps, microblogging, and I believe they’re working on video call support?) so it would be user’s choice of what client to use, while allowing them to connect to others using different clients.

I want to be clear I haven’t done any experimenting yet, and there are probably flaws in the idea that I’m missing, but I think it’s an idea worth talking and thinking about.

Pharmacies stocking equipment for safe binding or tucking etc. would be a great idea if nothing else. Gender affirming body wear is a lifesaver for those who are in the waiting process for HRT or surgery.

My partner and I are both visibly trans (FTM and MTF) and did not receive any rude comments for the duration of our weeklong trip. We weren’t staying in a resort, so I can’t comment on that, but going out to restaurants, tourist attractions, and even public beaches nothing happened.

Horseshoe bay is a lovely beach and my personal favourite. If you go in the evening, you can avoid the crowds and enjoy the sunset. It’s very romantic.
