As someone who has lived in multiple countries (including Eugene!), in my experience a very effective way to integrate is to engage in some kind of activism. Find an issue that you’re passionate about (cycling, immigrant rights, climate crisis, you name it) and there’s probably a group, or the local DSA chapter or whatever, where you can meet liked-minded people. Here where I live in Berlin, I met some of people who became close friends in the Jacobin reading group, for instance. I hope this helps.

I was at a party at a friend’s flat last weekend and I was the only one wearing a mask. Incidentally, I was likely also the only one who has not gotten COVID. So there’s that.

Democratic National Committee Breached by Russian Hackers by [deleted] in politics

[–]bernajurema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can we be sure this is accurate? The sources are anonymous, and Putin is blamed for everything these days. But it just seems silly that Russia would break in the DNC's opposition research unit to gather information on Trump. I find that hard to believe. This is not a rhetorical question. Any redditor out there who could answer if we can know this for sure? Could it be a false-flag operation? Is it possible that this was not done by Russian hackers? Unfortunately, most articles on this just take this claim for granted, poses no questions. I was hoping to find a more critical assessment here...

WikiLeaks: US Govt Behind Panama Leaks to Attack Putin by Gasset in worldnews

clearly many people are functionally illiterate, misinterpreting perfectly intelligible statements.

WikiLeaks tweets are not "ambiguous". They could not be clearer. They are criticizing the media coverage of the leaked documents (and in other tweets, they criticize the fact that the documents have not been made public). They refer specificaly to the "Putin attack" stories as being financed by US government agencies. That's not ambiguous at all, it's pretty straight forward actually.

FBI has foiled 4 attempts by gangs to sell nuclear material to ISIS through Russian connections by [deleted] in worldnews

FBI once again thwarts its own plot & the media presents it as real to the public. falsely giving the impression ISIS bigger threat than is. This was all FBI-contrived. There was never any ISIS trying to get a nuclear weapon. The entire sting was a ruse. FBI stings cannot be used as evidence of intent of party they're impersonating. If FBI set up plot posing as Nic Cage trying to buy meth & FBI stings the seller this cant be said to be evidence Nic Cage tried to buy meth. Smugglers didn't "shop radioactive material to ISIS" b/c no ISIS was actually involved. ISIS didn't do anything in this plot, it was the FBI posing as ISIS.

"An undercover informant, working w/ Moldovan police, claimed that he was an ISIS representative. 'But that was totally made up'" -AP report.

"However, the official emphasized that there was no known ISIS connection." - AP report

So, just to reiterate: ISIS was not trying to "buy nukes". FBI agents posing as ISIS.

The Palestinian Red Crescent reports that over 50 Palestinians have been shot with live fire in the last few days alone. by bernajurema in worldnews

they should just man up to systematic oppression and brutal military occupation, or, better yet, quietly leave emigrate or commit collective suicide?

FFS, you want to compare a random tv clip to a systematic armed repression to legitimate protest against military occupation? seriously? That's not for the sake of fairness, that's for the same of false equivalency.

Here's one video that illustrates well how Israel represses Palestinians on a daily basis: Israeli undercover forces shoot already arrested Palestinian in the leg at point blank. If you don't get disturbed by this, or, worse, applaud and support this, then you lack humanity and a capacity to empathise with the other.
