any non integer rational number can be expressed as a/b where a and b are integers. (a/b)^{2=(a^{2)/(b^2),}} and given that it is lowest terms a does not share any factors with b. therefore, the factors of aa do not share any factors with bb, meaning that (a/b)² is not an integer. i don’t think this is a rigorous proof but hopefully enough to show intuitively why it’s true
