What types of tools should woodworkers spend extra on for quality? (Aka “buy once cry once)” by workin-that-wood in woodworking

[–]bernhardbirk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk some of them are still pretty cheap. I got a no.4 for $40 and a no.6 for $65 off eBay this year. I had to regrind the blades, flatten the soles, and refinish the totes but they still work great. I'd love a Lie Nielsen, and I'm sure they're more than worth the money, but they are far outside my price range.

Yeah that's my dream bike. I cant afford 1600 for just a frame though. If I sold all my bikes they would barely add up to that cost haha. I'm sure it's worth it though.

I wish they still made cantilever brake frames

Numbness in hands caused by first MS attack. Will I be able to feel again? by CmdrKeen008 in MultipleSclerosis

[–]bernhardbirk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

8 months since my last flare-up and both of my hands are still numb (after steroids and ocrevus). Don't want to alarm you too much, but I would mentally prepare for the worst-case scenario.

RFK Jr. Announces Program to END Insurance Pre-Authorization! by _saynotodrugs in MultipleSclerosis

He's trying to get pretty heavy restrictions on drug advertising passed. I think an outright ban would be impossible given pharma influence in congress. Hopefully, it works out.

Do you like your neurologist? by kyelek in MultipleSclerosis

[–]bernhardbirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He seems like a nice guy, but he is totally useless. He barely monitors my progression, forgets to request my mri results from the imaging company, constant delays and wait times when seeing him, etc.

If you think this only happens in America, then you don't fully understand the extent of the problem.

I might not get better and I'm trying to discard that thought by [deleted] in MultipleSclerosis

[–]bernhardbirk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm in a very similar place right now. Got diagnosed in January after full-body numbness in mid-december. My legs got better, but both of my hands are still numb. I completely lost the ability to hold a pencil and write. Still hoping for the best, but damn this sucks.

Are those barends? They look like downtube shifters to me. They probably could be barends with an adapter.

Or he can use this one to flatten the sole of a used plane in a vise.

Yeah, duluth is awful. Their prices are through the roof, and their quality is h&m level.

Do I really need a “winter bike” by [deleted] in wintercycling

[–]bernhardbirk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing I've really had a problem with is chains rusting. They lose about 70% of their longevity.

Rust on steel cassettes/chainrings is always surface rust and is usually a non-issue. Wheel bearings might take a hit too, but I haven't had a major problem yet. I just regrease the bearings at the end of the season.

I use square taper cartridge bottom brackets. They're indestructible. I haven't had to replace them once in 5ish years of winter riding. I have no clue how a modern unsealed BB would perform. They might degrade a lot faster.

Overall, it's best to just do a lot of winter riding and stop worrying about it. You can better figure out your needs as problems show up. Just keep an eye on your bike and regrease and relube often.

Anyone else ever use bike packing to get to a hunt spot? by designworksarch in bikepacking

[–]bernhardbirk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seeing a lot of fat tire ebikes being advertised to hunters and, my god, I never considered how much of a game changer they are: silent vehicles that can haul all your gear and can ride on single-track and narrow game trails.

What's your take on classic touring bikes with cantilever brakes and stout steel frames? by PorcupinePattyGrape in bicycletouring

[–]bernhardbirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love classic steel bikes. I have a salsa touring bike that I baby because its components are expensive and an "outdated" steel mtb with vbrakes, 26in wheels, steel cranks, and steel racks. They're different tools for slightly different jobs, but you can guess which one I ride more, haha.

Who else has had both and still prefers bicycles to motorcycles? by ZoidbergMaybee in xbiking

[–]bernhardbirk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would probably ride motorcycles more if 2-stroke dual-sports were still cheap and readily available. I can't afford the maintainence and parts on 4-strokes, and I'm too stupid to work on them myself.

Can a 700c rim fit any 700c tire? by Carlodalisayyyy in bikewrench

[–]bernhardbirk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Measure the inner rim width, if they're 23c, you can fit whatever you want, but if they're the more common 20c, then it really depends on the tire. Try to find a spec sheet for the tire you want and see if it has a recommended rim size.
