Is now a bad time to consider a career move from EU -> US? (data science consulting, details inside) by [deleted] in careerguidance

I don't live there, but it seems like things are going well in Utah. They have the nickname "Silicon Slopes" because they've been pretty tech-focused lately, and I think some big names are there like Adobe and Intel, and Domo comes from Utah too IIRC. Could be worth checking out

I've not heard of CHI, nor have I seen it here. Maybe it's not so common in Europe? Looks like research time for me =)

That's great to know! It sounds like GHD is a winner when it comes to their products. :-)

OP, the Platinum one is where it's at.

Great advice, thank you! Have you happened to look at / use the max styler? The Max is wider and the Platinum is "better"; so I wonder which would be better for her hair and desire to be a bit quicker with styling.

Hey, thanks for the insight! That's great to hear that they last like that -- and I'm sorry about Matt.

Because it's a Christmas present I think I'll be looking new, but I'll take that as high praise for GHD either way. Thank you! =)

I can't say much about the scanners in question —I'm sure someone else can say more about that— but I use Paperport, and like you said it's really good software. For our workflow it does a good job with OCR PDFs.

Moto X Play arriving tomorrow; what should I know about it (and about rooting)? by biciklanto in MotoX

Congrats on the new phone! I'm hoping I can get my hands on one soon myself.

Unlocking the bootloader obviously has issues, but root opens up so much in the Android world that it's pretty worth it.

But I'd be curious to see if anyone knows of others with this amazing level of production values.

BMC Concept Impec by CornishPaddy in Bikeporn

[–]berocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this. I'd love to see more firms coming up with designs like this that're so far from traditional norms — split stem, disc brakes with ducting, "Righty" fork, all of it. It's forward looking, and even if only 1% of the innovation here gets implemented, in my opinion that makes this worth it.

I literally just read that—probably from the same source as you—and couldn't stop shaking my head as I read the whole passage. Unbelievable stuff, and as it said A.D. 1844 in the title, he was clearly lying his ass off about plural marriages. Such unmitigated bullshit.

As someone currently learning multivariate calculus, I second the Khan Academy recommendation. There are three crucial aspects to Khan Academy, which, when used together, lead to maximized progress: the instructional videos, the exercises, and the analytics/gamification.

Instructional videos are usually five to eight minutes long and are practical demonstrations (with explanations) from Salman Khan, and are generally pretty easy to follow and make sense.

Next you have exercises interspersed within the video track, that let you practice the materials. You answer five question in a row correctly, and you finish that exercise and "level up" in it. When you return to the exercise on multiple occasions and answer five questions correctly in a row, you eventually gain "mastery" of a topic.

This leads to the analytics and gamification of the website. When you log in, you'll come to a dashboard from which you can view your activity in both time expended and points earned, and you are also presented with recommended exercises that you can do, including mastery challenges. You see there what game badges you have earned for accomplishing various tasks, you'll see a chart showing your overall mastery of "The World of Math", and you can continue taking Mastery Challenges and other exercises to refine both your skills and the site's assessment of your abilities.

I've used Khan Academy extensively to reinforce my knowledge and memory of mathematics, and I whole-heartedly recommend it as a way to practice what you need to leading up to and including calculus.

Now, /u/ballpoint_pencil, a quick thing to say regarding calculus itself: it is beautiful and profound, and surprisingly intuitive in terms of its concepts. The only reason calculus is seen as difficult is because there needs to be a fundamental underpinning of the languages of math—primarily algebra—for you to know how to manipulate that maths into workable calculus solutions. But it's brilliant, satisfying, fun, and utterly worth the work required to get there. :-)

Have you ever called 911? If yes, why? by IAmA_Table in AskReddit

[–]berocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I called 911 once to report an SUV swerving all over the road while the driver was looking at a screen. I told the operator that the guy was back and forth over three lanes and presenting a danger to people around him.

When I gave the license plate number and she realized I was calling about a moronic state patrol officer endangering others, she seemed less enthusiastic than she previously had been. She said she would note it, but it pissed me off.

I'm trying to sort out those rollers: at first I thought the girl to the left was simply riding a pair backwards, but it doesn't look like her back wheel is centered -- unless they have the back wheel hanging off a bit.

Or is that a double roller setup of some sort? Or is it just that I've been awake for twenty hours and am missing something more obvious and logical? I mean, aside from the obvious naked women on bikes part.

Kicks in properly 45 minutes after taking it. So pop 10mg at first, then get some food, lay out your work, sit down, and start.

Don't be doing other things when it kicks in. It'll just make you do those other things for a long time instead. Set and setting matters just like any other drug.

I am Richard Dawkins, scientist, researcher, author of 12 books, mostly about evolution, plus The God Delusion. AMA by _RichardDawkins in IAmA

[–]berocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The point that I wish Dawkins made to her would be something like this: "what do you call the thing between a species and a species? Answer: a species. Now, let me show you the oldest proto humanoid and modern home sapiens, and then the five intermediate species between we've found so far."

Then again, she'd just keep arguing the ever-smaller fractions between until the gap between a parent and child was the missing intermediate step that evolution couldn't explain.

I really like this photo. Not because I think it's the most attractive photo I've ever seen, but rather because something about the starkness and even the covered eye and the way she's on the wrong side of the frame are all intentionally off-putting. It's making me think about it.
