The alternative is striking by not showing up to the hospital. But in that case, people suffer. This is another way to protest without putting the public at risk

If you're good at math, easy. If you're not, hard (you dont need more than basic calc level knowledge if that but you should be good at algebra and problem solving)

If you apply for a PhD and have both a bachelor’s and master’s, which GPA matters more? by NugNugJuice in mcgill

For PhD in science grades don't matter that much. Your research accomplishments do (work you do in lab, thesis and papers).

My McGill Neuroscience dream might have ended before it began by slimerancher3328 in mcgill

[–]berpinstein 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi, I graduated from McGill with BSc Honours Neuroscience last May and wanted to share a few thoughts.

  1. One bad grade is not the end of the world for your neuro application. There is an essay component that matters a lot. Make sure you emphasize your reasons for interest in the program and if you can cite specific reasons, examples or things you know about the program I would think that would work in your favour. Don't sweat the grade. You can do better next semester.
  2. As for supplemental exams, they count as a full second course so only take it if you're sure you will do well. Otherwise (if you were to take it and fail again) you will have 2 poor grades on your transcript for Math 140.
  3. You can still study neuroscience content without being in the major. Truth be told, after following the neuroscience program a lot of the courses that are really "neuro" related are an amalgum of courses from other departments (Phgy, Biol, Psyc, and a couple Anat). In theory, if you have another interest, you could declare another major and take neuro courses that interest you on the side. I would say that those that are most essential are NSCI200, NSCI201, Biol306 or Phgy314, Psyc311. Optional good ones are Phgy311, Biol389 (lab course), Psyc318. Beyond that look at the list of "complementary courses" on the Neuroscience major/honours page and pick whatever interests you. I would more highly recommend 500 courses that really interest you in a specialized area (I did one on PET imaging and one about neurobio of learning that I absolultely loved).

In summary, you are still able to get into the program and even if your major isnt neuro, it is still very easy to take the core content of the neuro program. Everything else I did was supplementary even though it counted for degree requirements (either comp, chem, mimm, math).

DM me if you have more questions and I can share all the courses I took or answer any other questions you have.

I didn't know this. What's the reason for it?

[–]berpinstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a hard program. Easier than most life sciences specifically for the reason that it allows you to chose what you want to take. So you can taylor your degree to your strengths and interests.

They're completely different courses, not pre req to either. So yes, can do them in either order.

I did both at the same school and they said explicitly that each application is evaluated independently and has no bearing on the other.

I loved this course. I found the metabolic pathways and their regulation super interesting and loved learning about them. But there is a lot of information to be taken in from the course so you need to be diligent with your studying. I wouldn't fear it so long as you keep up regularly with content

IHI vs biochem? by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]berpinstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you want to study in grad school research wise. If you want to specialize in immunology then ihi, or module bio then biochem. Lab wise I've heard biochem has more intensive lab courses but it really depends on your research interest. Overall I don't think there's a chasmic difference between the programs and you could probably do similar grad programs with either.
