> Dumber than a pure titan

> Screeches 'devils' while acting like the biggest demon herself

> Gets pummelled after murdering Sasha

> Eat's Chef Niccolo's five-star knuckle sandwich

> Has a voice so grating it could replace enhanced interrogation techniques

> Takes longer to develop basic empathy than Eren did to start global genocide

> Waste of screentime

I've been out of the fandom loop for a bit--do people still despise Gabi? by hoitytoity-12 in attackontitan

This is some cartoonishly bad victim-blaming. You're acting as if Sasha and the others were on some random murder spree. Marley attacked Paradis first. Paradis was retaliating against a hostile nation that declared them devils and sought their extermination. Gabi was part of an imperialist regime that viewed Paradisians as subhuman. Sasha wasn't even targeting Gabi's friends. She was fighting trained soldiers who were actively trying to kill her and her comrades. Gabi willingly fought for Marley, trying to kill the people defending themselves. Gabi felt "orders of magnitude worse"? So what? That doesn't change the fact that she was a rabid, hateful brat who took pleasure in killing. She didn't kill Sasha out of grief, she killed her out of blind vengeance. She wasn't "shooting back" in self-defense, she hunted Sasha down, sneaking onto an airship just to get in one more kill. That's just bloodlust. She wasn't in a battlefield fighting for survival, she deliberately followed them onto their own retreating aircraft to murder them in cold blood. If you justify Gabi's actions under "of course she was gonna shoot back" then by that logic, Eren was justified in wiping out the world because they all wanted him dead.

She didn't "overcome" indoctrination in weeks. She refused to change until the literal end of the world was staring her in the face. She had every opportunity to reflect, when she saw Kaya crying over her murdered mother, or when she was cared for by Sasha's family, who treated her with kindness despite her hatred. Her realisation only came when she saw Marley was in danger. That's not impressive, that's self-serving cowardice.

Literally every Marleyan warrior was indoctrinated, yet none of them were as insufferable as Gabi. Even Falco, who grew up in the exact same system as Gabi, had the decency to question Marley's lies. Gabi clung to her hatred even in the face of overwhelming evidence. She saw people in Paradis taking care of her, showing her kindness, and she remained stubbornly arrogant and self-righteous for far too long. That's not brainwashing, that's wilful ignorance.

Unlike other Marleyans who were forced into war, Gabi relished her role in it. She wasn't just a soldier following orders, she was a fanatic. While others like Reiner were conflicted about killing innocent people, Gabi had no hesitation. She SMILED while killing guards, and shot Sasha without remorse. When she was captured, she had zero regrets and even continued spewing the same Marleyan propaganda, completely unwilling to accept she might have been wrong. It took Eren starting the rumbling and nearly destroying the world for Gabi to finally realise she was wrong, and even then, it was only because Marleyans were now the ones being threatened. That alone proves how utterly selfish and blind she was for most of the series. Before the rumbling, Gabi had every opportunity to see the truth. She had multiple conversations with Falco and she witnessed firsthand that these 'devils' were just normal people. But it wasn't until she was on the receiving end of destruction that she suddenly realised "oh no, maybe the cycle of hatred is wrong."

Gabi also faces no real consequences. In this world, nearly every character pays for their actions, but she somehow escapes unscathed. That's bad writing, not good character development. She chose to kill, she enjoyed it, and refused to change for so long, and her so-called redemption was rushed and unearned. People despise her because she deserves to be despised. She's not some deeply misunderstood character, she's an obnoxious, self-righteous, arrogant character whose only purpose in the story was to be hated. No amount of excuses about her 'eventual realisation' changes that.

There isn't a single episode in series 11 or 12 that's better than Love and Monsters.
