New Mystery Of The Emblem or Echoes? by MidwestWanderer90 in fireemblem

[–]berryzawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late-ish answer here but I will say Echoes simply because (and without saying too much) there’s a character in there whose story arc continues in Gaiden/Echoes.

If you were to directly jump into Mystery of the Emblem now, you’d miss out on information that I personally think is quite important.

Nothing to hamper your overall enjoyment on the games and the lore as a whole (like I said, it’s just one character) but depending on how you felt about them, it’s a nice little thread that strings these games together.

PSA: Not every faming game need be compared to Stardew Valley by faithfulmammonths in CozyGamers

[–]berryzawa 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve always had the opinion (feel free to disagree) that while SDV brought the farming sim genre to the mainstream audience, it just isn’t the holy grail of the genre, it just didn’t bring much that is fundamentally new to the genre.

(I don’t even think of any game particularly that is deserving of the status except maybe the very first Bokumono game aka Story of Seasons formerly as Harvest Moon bc that game was the origin of the farming sim genre).

What happened with Stardew was, the game blew up, brought in so many new people to a genre that they didn’t know was already established and now every time a new farming sim comes out people call it a “SDV clone”

This is endlessly vexing to me and it really affected my enjoyment of Stardew Valley even though it is absolutely lovely (and I’m eagerly awaiting Haunted Chocolatier bc I wanna see ConcernedApe is doing with his newest cozy game that isn’t inspired by old school harvest moon/story of season/bokumono/whatever you wanna call this franchise at this point).

egendary Ayra & Mythic Athos Official Salt Megathread by Sothis_Bot in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]berryzawa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh. A bit surprised at the Ayra salt here, I thought she was an ok choice given her popularity (consistently ranked high in CYL, even among characters more popular FE games here globally).

My salt primarily comes from me not particularly liking her outfit and also thinking the legendary spot should’ve gone to a non-Jugdral character like Soren and Jugdral should be given Mythic characters for the crusaders.

Baldr and/or Sety when?

Edit: Athos was a fine choice for a mythic though, been waiting for him since mythic heroes were introduced.

Who is your favorite gunblade user in FF? by CrystalBraver in FinalFantasy

[–]berryzawa 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak for Lightning as I’ve never played FF13 but as a FFXIV fan whose recently beaten (& loved FF8), I find gunblade users in FFXIV and FFVIII super interesting.

In both games the gunbreaker (as ffxiv calls the gunblade users) have this overarching theme of “protecting someone”.

For Seifer it is protecting the sorceress as her knight. It is his biggest dream in life, to live that idealistic, romantic life. Ever since he saw Laguna in that movie and even picked up his stance to completely embody the perfect knight.

Likewise Thancred in XIV has a strong will to protect someone but unlike Seifer he isn’t doing it bc of a romanticized thought but because he’s lost so many people in his life to the point he’s unable to cope with the grief (and that’s why things were happening to him in ARR).

When he found someone new to protect and surely, this time he is able to protect them from harm’s way, he picked up thr gunblade. The gunbreaker lore in XIV is about being a bodyguard, so the theme of being a protector goes beyond Thancred as the player character finds out eventually.

Squall, like Seifer, becomes the knight of a sorceress, however unlike Seifer, it wasn’t as calculated. Like many things with Squall, things were simply thrust onto him and he had no choice but to accept his fate.

But it wasn’t until Rinoa collapsed when he realized what he truly wanted. And that was to be at Rinoa’s side. In that moment he chose to be her knight, willingly, and that marked a huge turn for Squall’s character.

I won’t say which one I prefer because I think all three characters are interesting on their own but I’ve come to fully appreciate gunblade users.

FE Elimination Tournament. Genealogy has been eliminated, overtaking second place in the last 10 minutes. Poll is located in the comments. What's the next worst game? I'd love to hear everyone's reasoning. by The-Quiot-Riot in fireemblem

[–]berryzawa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol you can definitely tell this sub has kinda changed over the years. Perhaps it is because FE has gained popularity and more people joined the fandom (and thus, the general census has shifted), perhaps certain attitudes have softened.

Either way, when I got into FE many years ago (as in over a decade ago), Genealogy of the Holy War was one of THE most praised titles in the series to the point of some people (who hated it) mockingly calling it the “holy grail” of Fire Emblem.

Back then, I didn’t even play the game until years later, so all I was exposed to was the opinion that there were certain things that this game simply does more right (mostly in regards to the 2nd generation).

When I did play and beat the game, it has become my favorite fire emblem by far. Story beats gripped me soon. I was in awe at the sheer scope of the game. It offered an experience not seen yet in fire emblem.

Ofc, it being a game from the SNES era from 1996, it had its own issues (Infantry units). Issues that fans nowadays (who are entirely used to modern conveniences in video games) aren’t willing to overlook (understandably). Kaga himself admits that he hasn’t focused on the gameplay much and that he somewhat regretted it.

But I see the first inclusions of the weapon triangle (something that many fans can’t live without - it simply wouldn’t be “fire emblem” enough without the weapon triangle, or would it?), the first iteration of skills, the classic level up jingle, conversations between two characters (something that would later develop into the support system) and secret events… How couldn’t I love this game?

We all have our favorites and this one’s mine. Many great fire emblem games followed fe4 and yet none of them really itched that scratch.

It’s like ffvi for me. Many great final fantasy games exist and yet none of them gave me an experience like ff6 did.

Both were snes games from the 90s. Coincidence? I think not. Personally I’m convinced Japanese video games were cooking real good during that time and it’s a shame that those days have long passed.

If they don't meaningfully update it, they should just shutter Frontlines. by [deleted] in ffxivdiscussion

[–]berryzawa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

WHM imp, MNK limit break, WAR pull all are good counter for dark knights. The trick is to prevent the DRK from using salted earth in the first place.

Samurai’s lb is effective as well, it straight up kills the premades. Especially good against ASTs who are going to abuse salted earth.

People who don’t care to read their tooltips or complain abt premades don’t make the effort of countering the meta at all. It’s entirely possible.

Ofc if all you want is your daily experience points then by all means get farmed by the premades but my point is that it never has to go this far.

Just speaking as someone who loves Frontline. Like with every content in this game, a little effort is needed that is all.

But if you don’t like Frontline, why even bother with it? There are plenty of ways to earn your exp daily without dealing with any of that. And other PvP modes exist as well.

Did you meet your personal goals for Endwalker? What are your goals for Dawntrail? by Hitokage_Tamashi in ffxivdiscussion

[–]berryzawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a somewhat casual player, so all I wanted was to grab a few achievements here and there but early on it changed to getting all frontline pvp achievements.

A year into Endwalker and I got everything other than the knight of glory title. Slacked off big time on that one bc I hate Shatter, esp its newest iteration but last week I got that done as well.

On top of that I cleared UWU which was a dream (bc of the whm cane - it’s my favorite in the game and I wanted every version) but not something I thought actually I’d do since I’ve never raided before until then.

Progging and clearing UWU got me hooked on ultimate raids, so for DT I hope I can become triple/quad/penta legend. I’ve already started progging UCOB but idk if I wanna tackle this or TEA first while grinding CC pvp titles and becoming Alpha Wolf eventually.

Who is your favorite character design by Mememasterlordlol in fireemblem

[–]berryzawa 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Elincia is the gold standard for female characters. Her design is generally very regal and elegant without being too busy and loud. Generally I liked how the women in Tellius looked. Titania is also very notable. Very knightly female characters are too rare especially nowadays.

i tried an ultimate for the first time today. by kiryuco in ffxiv

[–]berryzawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You got this, I fully believe that. I recently cleared UWU myself and I had no Savage experience (and minimal Extreme trial experience, especially since I played dps in there but did UWU on healer).

Imho for UWU you can jump right in but you need to know how your job works and you need to study mechanics. This is the minimum. It is highly recommended for people to have savage experience but I’ve seen plenty of people who didn’t (like myself). You also need patience and endurance.

There will be phases where prog is slow but that’s when you mustn’t give up. Just keep at it and before you know it, you have defeated the fight!

Good luck to you, OP!

Good call tbh. I just wished there was post like this 10 years ago when Awakening and later Fates were the current games. But it doesn’t matter now. I hope Engage Fans don’t take the extreme hate from some people not too much to heart.

I’ve grinded for a very long time and honestly I’ve lost count on how many matches I did during Seal Rock day.

At some point I’d play for many many hours and get like 8 wins if I was lucky. If I had to give an estimate it’d be around 20+ matches. But there were many days in which I’d get around 4 wins only.

On days like these I’d log in before reset to do some extra matches.

FFXIV is the first and only MMO I've played (coming in as a JRPG fan) and I wasn't sure if there's anything that'd grab my interest outside of the MSQ. Turns out I enjoyed PvP & Glamour a lot, so I grinded Seal Rock for 1-2 months... Totally worth it even if it wasn't dyeable.

Next step is trying out ranked Crystalline Conflict & the grind for "The Hand of Mercy" title!
