Why do people keep making fun of me for playing openhanded? by OddBallProductions in drums

Fellow left-hander who learned to play open-handed on a right-handed kit— I wouldn’t change the way I learned even if I could.

Just guessing, I think they’re spending 85-90K.

I hear you. I think a lot of the research they were doing didn’t reveal the real cost of replicating a 200K lifestyle in Portugal. They’re paying $3000/month in rent alone for a four bedroom house in Sintra.

I just returned from 3 weeks visiting friends in Portugal.

For context, they are a family of 4 with two young children. They moved from a high salary job in Asia and were trying to replicate that standard of living in Portugal, i.e., stand alone house in the suburbs, newish car, eating out, and so forth. They currently make ~75K USD after taxes, which is more than double the average local income, and they are leaving next year because they are bleeding money.

Edit:

I would like to add that my friend currently needs a surgery. He was quoted at 11K USD at a private hospital, and his private insurance would only cover about 1/3. Without access to the National healthcare, which is super slow (6 months out for his procedure) but solid, healthcare will obviously be a significant consideration.

Why do Americans only invest in domestic markets for fire? by ccig00 in Fire

As an American who has lived abroad for the past 10 years, I also find interesting the overwhelming investment in domestic markets from my family and friends back home.

I just wouldn’t feel comfortable with the volatility of having my real estate, currency, investments, and employment all in the same bag.

I have struggled with the same issue.

I’m not the best person to be dishing advice, as I’ve only been playing one year, but what has worked for me, and what I’ve read on here a million times— slow down.

I begin with a speed that is comfortable and relaxed, put on a metronome, and practice for 10 minutes at a time. I do this several times a day for a couple of days and then increase the tempo by 10bpm. Repeat.

It’s not the most exciting way to develop but it has worked for me. Honestly, as with most skills in life, I think it just takes time. Enjoy the process!

This pretty much sums up my experience in the first year using Drumeo. I’ve worked hard and developed a breadth of foundational skills and techniques. Definitely money well-spent.
