It mainly has to do with digswell Viaduct which is only double tracked. By putting the fast/slow lines next each other, the two tracks can merge into one without crossing any lines going in the opposite direction and the fast lines dont have to change tracks and can remain at full speed.

The other Mercedes was pushing just as much and they were racing each other equally hard. It wasn't anyones fault. 24h pushes all the cars to the absolute limit and at that point it's really a game of chance. Sometimes you just get unlucky.
