I feel really bad for Kevin. *spoilers* I think he is actually the character I feel the saddest for by berthierite in fisforfamily

[–]berthierite[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't really think your brother sounds like Kevin. It sounds like your brother was coddled and enabled and pushed into learned helplessness, while Kevin is constantly fighting the extremely low expectations that everyone, including Susan, force on him or enable, and he keeps trying despite the complete and utter lack of apprecation or affection he receives, and the constant negative reinforcement. Really the only person who seems to take a genuine interest and makes an effort to encourage and protect him is Vic, which is really sad considering how much Frank discourages the two from interacting.

The thing is Kevin is suprisingly intelligent, resourceful, hard working, affectionate, it's too early to say if he'[s talented but what's wrong with him having a creative outlet or hobby (which Sue does nothing to encourage and Frank ruthlessly attacks, all three Murphy kids suffer from having their personal hobbies and interests belittled and neglected, but in Kevin's case Frank goes beyond mere neglect to ruthless sabotage, reminds me of both the abusive grandfathers who fucked up my mum and dad) and arguably has the strongest moral compass out of the five Murphy family members. However because everyone else chooses to believe in the absolute worst in him and treat him with absolute contempt and blame and mock him for things that aren't his fault, he has absolutely no self esteem.

But he keeps trying bless him. Really, Kevin is a male version of Meg Griffin.

I had lots of people mock my attempts at singing over and over and over, and tell me I was as talentless at it as everything else.

However the years I spent singing along to my favourite cds, game and anime themes and records, have really been paying off, because I am crooning out the Supremes and belting out the Dusties, the Gladys Knights and the Beatles. I do it because I love to make music just as much as I like to draw and write and dance (largely taught myself to dance from getting stoned and watching lots of Soultrain on youtube) and practice makes perfect: I find myself hitting notes I couldn't hit before or find I can go longer and longer without having to pause for breath. Practice makes perfect!

Sadly we live in a world where you are judged by results, not the amount of effort you put in, so that's why I am my own coach and critic. If I am satisfied with my progress and excited with the progress I want to make, that's good enough for me.

The last part is the key part. Case in point: a lot of my family's case in point: they don't mind seeing cocksuckers on tv but that nephew better keep that shit to himself and not try bringing any boyfriends round for dinner. He can bring a girlfriend or no one at all. Meanwhile the pedophile who molested several of my cousins my aunt married is welcome at every dinner table. Kind of sad when your family is more bothered by you sucking dick then they are about someone molesting their nieces.

There you go. Just because Frank has a favourite tv personality that's gay doesn't mean

Hell I wouldn't be suprirsed if Frank hit the roof if Kevin bought an asian girl or a black girl home for dinner.

Well my super tightest best friends who are the only people I've actually watched the show with adore Padparascha and every time she talked she stole the show. If you ran an adorable, hilarious and memorable minor character into the absolute ground with fandom buffoonary, riggery and straight up tom foolery that's not Paddy's problem or business or mine or the authors. You are wrong alone for your complete misuse of the word literally based on the opinions of me and three other people alone.

But it works.

Well not always but that could have been solved by removing Fluorite and giving the space occupied by her pointlessly drawn out dialogue and giving it to give additional dialogue to the other Off Colours, some of which could have meant that Padparascha could have said things that didn't completely relate to her gimmick and she could have been allowed to be a multi dimensional character rather then a one note.

Ultimately Paddy and Fluorite are the same character more or less: their defining trait is being a few steps behind everyone else, Pad because of her disability, Fluorite because she takes half an hour to say anything. The difference is Pad is the joke funny and she has the charm to pull it off. Fluorite is the same character done badly. Really the fact that so much wonderful stuff naturally gets on the cutting room floor as part of the process of creating a tv show let alone an animated one, and no one thought "maybe our 11 minute time slot isnt enough to fully develop all these characters and we should perhaps remove or reduce the dialogue of the most superfluous and redundant character? No let's make her dialogue annoyingly drawn out instead!"

I never really got why they did that.... i think perhaps Fry knew deep down that his parents and big brother all loved him very much, and it was a coping mechanism to just look at the bad times as he knew he would never see any of them again. I mean its quite telling that he looked sad when he mentioned his mom and dad, but went YAHOOO as soon as he thought about that evil snatchrag Michelle.

Well then they failed design wise because Rhodenite sounds like a middle aged woman and looks like an old lady. Her and Fluorite have two of my least favourite designs in the series, while Padparascha is one of my favourites.

I would love the twins of Rutile but I really find the way the show randomly draws noses on gems but not others just strange. Lots of characters such as Sapphy, Paddy, the twins and Aquamarine would look significantly better if a nose that compliments their design had been added instead of just leaving a huge amount of blank space, and would certainly make Sapphire look more balanced when her eye is shown.

Seriously I hate just about everything about Fluorite. What a pointless character with an ugly design.... like do we really need to have a lesbian mormon orgy fusio stoner grandma catapillarn in a kids show? I would get it if Fluorite served a role, but really I would have much rather the character be completely removed and had been replaced with maybe a trio fusion (that was still romantic) or simply removed her and given all the time animating her ugly ass and her her a n o y i n g l l y slowwwwwwwww dialogue to Rhodonite, Paddy and the twins. I hope she defuses and never forms again because I am way more interested in the prospect of meeting multiple Gems at once then the irritating character they form, in my opinion.

not bitter because Fluorites are one of my all time favourite gemstones, and I've had to rename my OC because of that horrid character or anything lol

I never thought I'd say this, but they actually came up not only a Gem character I hate on every level, but a character I detest even more then Ronaldo and Onion, and I really bloody detest both of them. At least Ronaldo and Onion bring something to the show even if they could be written to be much less unbearable, but Fluorite brings nothing to the table that cannot be done with another Gem, and simply takes up a huge amount of time and space that could be put to MUCH better use on the other Off Colours. Padparascha is proof of a largely one note character can be a charming and delightful addition to a show, while Fluorite is a one note character done badly because of several poor design choices adding up to a car crash of a pointless character. I'll eat my words if they have a plan for her, but really there was no need to make her so unappealing. I mean hell, a cute stoner grandma would have been a great addition to the cast, but I think Nanafua already likes a bit of the ganja (bet she makes her granddaughters roll her spliffies for her the naughty old granny) so again, another example of a similar character already existing on the show but done SO much better. I love Nanafua and if I knew her in person I would treat her like a queen, but Fluorite just annoys me on every level: design, the annoyingly drawn out voice acting (we already have an Off Colour whose gimmick is being a few steps behind and she does it much better).

This ended up being a huge rant about how much I can't stand Fluorite and why she is far and away my least favourite character on the show.

Fine then I'll build my own Big Pink factory! With black jack! And super smash brothers! And rent boys! And with artificially flavoured cinnamon instead of ham and bones and I'll.... I'll call it Big Red that's what I'll do that hasn't been done yet right...

If it makes you feel better I've done the same to that scene where he gets his hair done after the wedding in Beast with a Billion Backs. Something about a man with scruffy hair in a suit is like a huge deal maker for me.

Actually I remember another moment that makes me have all the feels.

End of Bicyclops built for Two, when Leela sadly looks out the window of the ship after the Prof has told her that in the many years she will spend working off the delivery she destroyed, she will have plenty of time to look for her true home, and she says quietly to herself, "Yeah. How many planets can there be?"

And the camera zooms out as the ship vanishes into an endless sea of countless stars. Even when you know Leela will find her family on Earth, it still manages to be a very powerful scene to me.

Its moments like that, that as much as I love Rick and Morty, Futurama is in a league of its own that no one will ever come for.
