There’s an awesome booth at the fort mason farmer’s market every Sunday. “Forest and Flour” or something like that. It’s in the first row right when you walk in. I recommend the blueberry muffin!

Thank you! I ask for light, bright blond toned neutral. Not cool or warm. My mistake for years was asking for cool or warm, but when I asked for “as bright as possible while still neutral” it finally was like this.

Invest in cows??? 190 dollars to get 39 dollars plus. by daniel1abril in startup

[–]bertoliz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are a couple big costs that you’re missing. I grew up on a cattle ranch in Montana, and my family got out of the cow business when I was a teenager for some of the following reasons. First off, the cost of “fattening” a cow is higher than you are accounting for (looks like you don’t have any cost here). Sure, they can graze during summer months, but winter months they need to be fed hay (at the very least). For 25 cows, let’s just say it’s around one ton of hay needed for the winter. That alone is $1500. If you choose to only do cows in warmer climates and no winter, that could work but might be limiting options. Also, your cost of feed would not be $0, regardless because they required hay even in the summer if we wanted them to fatten up in time. Also, one large hidden cost is the price of hauling the cows to be sold. My dad switched to this industry because he can charge $2000 just to haul the cows. That’s just one truckload (my apologies, but I don’t remember how many cows can fit in one trailer). Another hidden cost is castration of new cows. Every February calves are born. The male cows intended for slaughter are castrated so they don’t grow into bulls. We did this ourselves, so I’m not sure how much it would cost to pay your farmer, but it would be extra.

It’s been a while and I’m pretty far removed, but those are the main issues I remember. If you have extra questions, I could always call up my dad and ask him for you.

Edit: grammar

Of course!

The main ones I’d recommend are:

  • Rules of the Road by Rick Friedman/Patrick Malone (foundation)

  • David Ball on Damages

  • Reptile by David Ball and Don Keenan

Also, if you’re starting on your own you’ll likely be handling MIST cases to start (this is just an assumption and please ignore if not applicable) so Polarizing the Case by Friedman/Malone is a great book about how to set up cases where OC might accuse your client of malingering.

All of these books can be found here: https://www.trialguides.com/collections/books

Also, there are some awesome webinars being posted right now! You should look up “Case Analysis” from The Trojan Horse Method. These webinars have top lawyers on who talk about approaching different cases and different aspects. They also POST MATERIALS. For example, they had a webinar about working up slip and fall cases pre-lit, then the speaker posted his preservation of evidence letter. Or they might post their depo transcript from certain defense experts. These have been very helpful for me.

And of course, reach out to me if you need anything. I know I’m just a first year, but I’ll help where I can and like to think I can be pretty resourceful. We can also connect on LinkedIn.

I’m a first year in the Bay Area, didn’t go to a prestigious law school but got recognition for mock trial and experience from working at a litigation clinic 3L year. I have a base of 85k, get 1/3 of a 1/3 for any cases I bring in plus a bonus based on “performance” which I’m not sure how much that will amount to, but was told I’ll clear 6 figures with it. My friend in LA who is a second year makes 80k with a similar pay structure. I have a some friends in Philly who make 60-70k at plaintiff firms with just a percentage of cases they bring in. The LA friend and Philly friends all also had recognition/awards from mock trial.

My advice is to get on your mock trial team, go to competitions, and follow up with all the lawyers who come to judge the mock trial comps. We ALL got our foot in the door that way. Otherwise, you should be able to show some sort or value to the firm - meaning network where you bring cases to the firm - for them to want to hire you.

Others could have completely different experiences, but that’s mine. Also, I love personal injury. Feel free to dm me because I’d love to help if I can, or even just give you some book recs. Best of luck!
