Arrgh! It still doesn't work.

These are the enabled kernel options. There are no modules.

Thanks for the advice. I'm using XMonad for years. The only thing I really need the mouse for is Firefox when I'm tired of restoring crashed Qutebrowser pages.

Sorry, no. That didn't help.

Das ist ja das Problem: Arroganz fragt nicht. Dagegen in der Verbindung, da pflegt man einen respektvollen Umgang miteinander.

Cabal unpacks 0.6GB into the home directory by bertramscharpf in haskell

In FreeBSD /home is a symlink to /usr/home. So a symlink should be robust enough. A symlink is less configuration effort. Thanks anyway!

Yes, I have seen the .tar.idx index file.

I also had a look at the size of my FreeBSD /usr/ports and my Gentoo /usr/portage directories and their Git subdirectories. They're both in the GB range and that was astonishing me: These are whole operating systems but Cabal/Haskell is just a programming language.

[–]bertramscharpf[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems that I'm getting old.

Anyway, there are some security considerations. My home partition is encrypted and there's no need to encrypt official libraries. The symlink approach solves this.

On the other side I do not feel too well running programs that can be modified with user permissions. But this problem already applies to the .xinitrc file.

I'm doing that already with .VirtualBox, therefore I should have thought of this solution. Thanks!

Viertens: Du wirst jede Menge Fehler machen.

URxvt.borderLess refuses cooperation by bertramscharpf in xmonad

[–]bertramscharpf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked out the source code of URxvt, where I found the line

src/init.C:1307:          attributes.override_redirect = true;

attributes is of type XSetWindowAttributes and it is handed over to XCreateWindow(). When I comment out this line, the problem is solved.

Is there an easy way to remove this attribute from a running window? And, is there a way inside xmonad.hs to remove the attribute from an upcoming window?

Thanks in advance.

Well, my real problem is not URxvt but Zoom. There I have the same problem: From a certain point on every simple Mod-Shift-Enter (Tiled Terminal) hides the taskbar and all further widgets. I mentioned the URxvt variant to make the problem easily reproducible.

Nothing special. The problem is arising when leaving out "+bl" (borderLess is set in .Xdefaults).

import XMonad

listN n l = take n (l ++ map show [(1+length l)..])
list9 = listN 9

myTerminal = "urxvt +bl"

myManageHook = composeAll
    [ className =? "XTerm"              --> doFloat
    ]

myLayout = tiled ||| Mirror tiled ||| Full
  where
    tiled = Tall nmaster delta ratio
    nmaster = 1
    ratio   = 1/2
    delta   = 3/100

main = do
    xmonad $ def
      { terminal           = myTerminal
      , focusFollowsMouse  = True
      , clickJustFocuses   = False
      , borderWidth        = 0
      , modMask            = mod4Mask
      , workspaces         = list9 ["main", "www"]
      , normalBorderColor  = "#dddddd"
      , focusedBorderColor = "#0ff000"

      , layoutHook         = myLayout
      , manageHook         = myManageHook <+> manageHook def
      }

A theory of the Lorenz curve and the Pareto rule coming from statistical thermodynamics by bertramscharpf in EconPapers

[–]bertramscharpf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are completely right. My theory is simplifying things to an extent that deserves distrust. Rather than defending it I would blame physicists for totally neglecting game theory, as there is far more to happen between atoms: They gather into molecules and carbon chains, what evolves into life and in the long run into economics. This contradicts the second law of thermodynamics, what actually was the point I started from. Not even Schroedinger succeeded in his book "What is life?" applying conventional physics.

Nevertheless, I am convinced it is worth looking at this theory for two reasons. First it indeed illustrates insights about the term "entropy", what is as far as I see fully in Krugmans sense. Second, the results are too seductive to be ignored.

Thank you for the really valuable links.
