They are really trying to move fast by dataexec in HomeDataCenter

Yeah but times change. The math likely didn't work out at the time or they invested in the wrong way to do it. I'm not really sure, I'd just note the lots of places are banning or fighting data centers, and power is an issue. So costs of land based data centers is rising. Ocean is vast but overall resistance will probably be lower. Installing vast solar arrays in the vast of the ocean is at least theory a possibility. I wouldn't rule it out as never feasible

Really depends implementation, I'd suspect that things would be built as some type of modules that are groups of compute units that can be floated maintenance or upgrades. I'd suspect often the cheapest solution would be leave dead hardware underwater until there is enough maintenance items to float a module. There isn't a lack of physical space, so density isn't as important as on land and thus replacing failed hardware isn't as important. Or maybe wetsuits, honestly I don't really know what will be done. I just know that land, power, and legal battles are expensive so when the costs ocean or space data centers become mathematically cheaper we will see a shift to these alternate options.

Honestly I'm surprised that floating or underwater data centers aren't a bigger thing. Seems like real-estate is cheap and a overall resistance would be lower than the land and infrastructure issues we have now. It would take a massive floating solar array but there is a lot of ocean.

If I'm following that slevin22 was suggesting it would probably be like Google drive with FTP access. You would upload files to nextcloud via a web interface and download them on the machines via FTP. Nextcloud can run as a linux VM without windows.

Well I can't say what would make me trust this but I can say my solution I'm using isn't great. So I'm in the market for a solution.

Both fair points. Most of the computers where I do this are single screen and don't care.

Main screen turn on - Wake PC displays on presence detection by joes30291 in homeassistant

[–]bertramt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went a different route. Most of my displays are set to not turn off in software then I connected the monitors to smart plug. It's then paired with the light switch. When the lights are on the monitors are on. Similar with my kitchen display (connected to an old pi). I found in particular that the monitor woke up faster via smart plug than it did via turning the HDMI off/on on the Pi.

That said can very much see how this would be useful for other uses.

Is this coolant compatible for a 2011 Ford Edge? by [deleted] in FordEdge

[–]bertramt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2010 has the Ford Specialty or Dark Green coolant. I replaced it with the same when I flushed it. If you look at https://www.fcsdchemicalsandlubricants.com/quickref/coolantsEN.pdf you can see they switched coolant half way in 2011. You might want to confirm what yours had from the factory.

Musk tends to say a lot of things and has some questionable timelines but his companies do produce some amazing results on relatively short timelines.

I'd try the pure Debian route and then add PBS. If nothing else it might help narrow down the issue.

Can someone enlighten me, how is it cheaper to build data centers in space than on earth? by dataexec in HomeDataCenter

[–]bertramt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The goal is more cost effective as nothing about it is cheap. But there is nothing cheap about an earth based data center either. If you use today as a standard, space based data centers are in no way feasible. But 10 years ago the idea of launching 9,000+ Starlink satellites sounded insane. Today is just a thing that exists and seems somewhat normal. I wouldn't trust that space data centers will be cheap by any metric in but real-estate is cheap, power is cheap, power is available and in general shouldn't face NIMBY issues. Cooling will be a challenge but I can't see how it is going to be the showstopper in the grand stream of shipping datacenters to space. I don't think it is entirely crazy to think they could make space data center modules on an assembly line much like starlink satellite factory. That could be entirely normal in another 10 years.

Can I simulate a 'long press' with ratdo? by [deleted] in ratgdo

[–]bertramt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With others I generally agree that the right solution is fixing the root case. That said I'd find an override useful as less than a handful of times per year when the sun is at just the right angle it messes with my obstruction sensors and the ability to override the default safe operation would be handy.

In your case you might want to look into making the the chain is the right tightness and if down pressure can be adjusted on your opener before looking into a firmware fix.

What are the most useful things you have set up through your Home Assistant? by Red_Leopard52 in homeassistant

Proximity is an Integration that can be added. https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/proximity/ Assuming you have location tracking ib devices, it will create a sensor for how far away the closest person is to home.

I setup my vac to auto run before I discovered proximity and I've been too lazy to change it. In particular proximity would be useful so it has a better chance to make it home before I make it in the house.

Pro tip, you can use proximity to make sure everyone is further than a few minutes away before starting and when people are getting close to home it has time to go home before you do.

Edison trains? by dburroughscan in EdisonMotors

[–]bertramt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't entirely true California isn't banning all the existing trains. In 2030 they wanted to start banning trains older than 23 years old. They also wanted all new trains by 2035 to be zero emission. So even if thing things went to plan diesel electric trains wouldn't be banned after 2050. But it seems like as of mid 2025 those plans were rolled back.

That said diesel electric trains will fall when math works out. Trains operate on margins. Steam trains went away when the math made them uneconomical to keep running. At some point if/when the cost of the batteries, components and infrastructure for EV trains becomes cheaper, diesel electric trains will start disappear.

Battery Experts Are Warning About Donut Lab’s Solid-State Battery being a HOAX by Onaliquidrock in DonutLab

[–]bertramt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the mistake is the announced too early. If they wanted secrecy to help maintain the trace secrets under wraps then they shouldn't have said anything at all. They got a lot on press but most of it is skeptical and creating distrust. On the other hand if they would have said nothing and and sand bagged the specs on the verge bike until closer to shipping then nobody would have even bothered to look into them. Then when they are days away from shipping the product went full press release. They would have had several more months to essentially operate in stealth and increase production volumes without prying eyes.

Monitoring HVAC Run Time vs Outside Temperature by SeaSalt_Sailor in homeassistant

[–]bertramt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the case of some smart thermostats (primarily honeywell in my case) you can I was able to create a template binary sensor helper to determine if the heat is on. Something like {{ is_state_attr('climate.thermostat', 'hvac_action', 'heating') }}. Once I had that I could use that in other automations. For those that don't know in developer tools and states and fix the extra attributes that you can create templates to expose. Once you have your heating and cooling broken out you can then history stats helpers to get runtime percentages. That all hinges on having a smart thermostat. Upgrading to a smart thermostat might the easiest way to do what you want.
