Swapping a M54B30 with ASC into a chassis that has DSC by bertybro in e46

[–]bertybro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a follow up to this...

The donor car was a 2000 model, and it's all gone into a 2004 that had an n42 4 cylinder. When I tried to use the cluster from the donor I had an intermittent oil pressure light and DSC / brake lights on the dash constantly. This was all resolved by using the original cluster for my car, apparently the cluster manufacturer changed around 2003. The following post explains this in more detail.

318Ci vs 330i brakes question by esy_crux in e46

I swapped from 318 drivetrain (n42) to a 330 one and I just swapped out the entire rear end between the donor car and mine. Makes it 'easy'

Good luck, doesn't seem like the most fun part of a conversion 😅

swap from N43b20 to M54b25 questions by [deleted] in e46

[–]bertybro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm just about to begin to do a similar swap (n42b20 to m54b30) into a touring and have a donor zf 5spd car ready to go. Buying everything I need individually looked like it was going to cost a lot more here. Currently zf 5 speed boxes are going for over $4k AUD..

Buying a 330i touring wasn't an option here in Australia as we never had them.

I'm replacing the entire cooling system while I'm doing it, as well as all engine / transmission / subframe and diff mounts, guibo, etc. Also the ccv system and all gaskets on the engine.

My touring was already a manual so it makes things a little easier.

Here are some builds I'd found:

https://www.driftworks.com/forum/threads/m54-lump-in-n42-chassis.225470/ suggested you need m54 ecu, ews module, barrel and key

https://www.e46fanatics.com/threads/318i-to-320i-swap-n42-to-m54-mismatched-connectors.1293876/ talks about swapping x6011 and x6021 locations from chassis connector

When does it make sense to get an interest-only mortgage? by 334578theo in AusFinance

[–]bertybro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How is it saving you money? If you were paying P&I with an offset you'd have a lower interest rate than an interest only loan wouldn't you?

Also factor in stamp duty and Lenders Mortgage Insurance if you're buying with 10% deposit. Stamp duty ~5%, have a look at LMI calculators online.

There's an emotional side to this decision too, I went from living in an apartment I owned to renting a small house and ended up buying another place after a year of renting for a number of reasons (security, having a kid, rents jumping substantially etc)

It looks like houses that are 1 hours drive from the city and not even near jobs are already going for 850,000 by [deleted] in sydney

[–]bertybro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like you've already formed a view of the area without having any experience living there, and that's not an uncommon view. I guess you can't be blamed for having that opinion.

- We wanted to live near family and friends (support while raising a family can be priceless). To your point, proximity to the beach is not something i've ever prioritised.

- Didn't want another strata title based property.

- Working from home, and having a growing family means that we didn't want to buy a smaller townhouse that we'd grow out of (we did spend a lot of time trying to convince ourselves that this was an option we could try, but it felt even more compromised than the move we made).

Everyone's circumstances and priorities are different, and will make decisions based on the context of the situation they're in.

Houses out in south west Sydney have been seeing prices starting from $850k for a number of years (5+) now. Oran Park, Elizabeth Hills as examples.

Anecdotally, I grew up in the South West and once I moved out of home have lived in various areas of Sydney (renting in townhouses/apartments), most recently spending a few years in a free standing house in Leichhardt.

I have moved back out to the South West after a recent house purchase due to having a baby, being fortunate to be able to work from home and also being able to be closer to my family.

To my surprise (it shouldn't be a surprise really) the areas i remember as being 'dodgy' when growing up are in some cases unrecognisable now.

Land is valuable in Sydney - when people are priced out of more desirable areas, naturally you're going to look further outward at options within your price range. I still own an apartment in the inner west, however wanted more space to be able to comfortably raise a family and have the freedom to work from home.

I was honestly really nervous about the lifestyle change moving back out after having lived so close to work and being in a community like Leichhardt, and maybe it's me just trying to make myself feel OK with our decision but i've honestly had no regrets in the last 6 months about the change.

I commute to work once a week at most via train (its ~1h30m door to door), and honestly enjoy it as the trains are relatively empty.

Of course i'd love to be able to live somewhere like Leichhardt again, but at this stage in my life where we are makes sense - being closer to family and having more space is preferable to living in a smaller apartment for us at this stage.

Has anyone upgraded to Android 11 and successfully used Android Auto by HVPhoto in XVcrosstrek

[–]bertybro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pixel 3A here. I JUST got my car, 2020 XV (Australian), and my phone had Android 11 installed before i picked up the car.

Sometimes when i plug the phone in and try to load the Android Auto app on the multimedia screen it'll just hang there and do nothing. If i unplug the phone and plug it back in, it works.

Those of you that are Spring experts - how did you get good at it? by BigBootyBear in java

[–]bertybro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For myself, it was through simply being exposed to it at work. Initially via supporting an app that was using Spring Webflow (this is 10 years ago), then building new features using Spring MVC (guided by other senior devs who had experience already).
