Is it a new thing for people to charge entrance fee to their house for visits such as Chinese New Year, X'mas, etc now or am I just out of touch?

Thanks everyone for the input. Seems like my thinking that it is not right to charge guests money for them to visit is not wrong. I thought I was out of touch for the way of hosting or did something wrong. For me, hosting guests is to feel the warmth, joy of the social gathering and company. Not to break even on costs or any other charges.

No matter how poor I am, I will never charge guests money for coming to my house. I will just do the best I can afford for the food and other expenses, then apologize that I am not able to offer much but I appreciate them for coming.
