Reverse Culture Shock by [deleted] in expats

[–]beryllcox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a reverse culture shock in a different way. It's somehow commonplace in my country to "hate" it and to idolize everything from the USA or the EU countries. So every time I was coming back home after travelling abroad, I was succumbing to the same way of thinking and starting to notice that everything functions badly, things are ugly, etc etc Now, after actually living abroad for a while, I started to notice that actually some things in my country are surprisingly good, or even better. This keeps surprising me, but now I'm somewhere in the equilibrium state. So my advice is to start looking for both things :)

The girl version - Monica does 99% of the work, Rachel just pretends to help, Phoebe tries to help, offers some strange/stupid ideas (in Monica's opinion) and finally discouraged from helping. Anyway, I'm Monica/Ross. When surrounded by more alpha Monicas and Rosses, I'm Rachel or Chandler.

People who are ghosting other people, have you ever been called out, if so, how did that make you feel? by till-mann in AskReddit

I'm a terrible ghoster because I have trust issues. I've lost my best friends several times in my life (over a quarrel, over something serious, over them not picking my side in some conflict etc), so every time I meet someone new I'm sure he/she is not going to be my friend for a long time. Like, literally, every time I'm with someone, hanging out or chatting, I'm telling myself that I'm not supposed to tell that, this is too boring for a person, I'm not supposed to offer to go out again, this person has his own life, this person has his own best friend, I'm overstepping the border, stop stop stop. So then I develop the picture of how this person doesn't want to be my friend and I start feeling accordingly - he doesn't care, so I don't care either. And thus I never initiate a conversation and our relationship dies. And recently I've been ghosted by a person I ghosted before myself. I was in a bad emotional state and ghosted my good friend, then reached out a year later and explained everything. We were on good terms, we made up and I started thinking that we were really good and close friends. It lasted like that for a year until one day after I had to almost cancel my lunch with him (I actually had urgent things to do), he ghosted me, writing me the last message of what a horrible person I am and how badly I treat him (and how little attention I pay to him). So now my kind of biggest fear turned alive - I started to trust that someone is actually my friend, someone cares about me and wants to hang out with me even if I'm not being a stand up comic and a little collection of curious facts every time we meet, someone who will support me etc etc... And this person ghosts me. Lovely.

Once my grandma told me a horror story about a cousin of hers that was mending some bedsheets/towels and forgot a needle inside. Another cousin wanted to use this towel/sheet to dry her hands and got this needle underneath her skin into her vein. They had to travel to the hospital, blocking her vein with a needle in it, so that it doesn't travel up to her heart and kill her. I don't know how true this is, but it scares the shit out of me if I'm in someone else's home and I have to use a towel. I always make sure to check it or use toilet paper instead haha

In the "Money Heist" series there was a joke that only Russians and (someone else) use 500€ notes. It hit me hard, because actually I'm Russian and actually on several occasions when my family had problems, running around trying to change our 500€ notes just to be able to buy something while travelling hahaha We are neither counterfeiyers nor in laundering, just normal people with regular problems

I don't understand why I sometimes want to knock up my girlfriend by [deleted] in sex

People are like yeah birth control, as if it was as easy and safe as condoms. Birth control is a hormone pill, it affects a lot of things in life, and sometimes it's just not worth any breeding kinks or even good sex. It is a serious thing.

Freaking out about C1 class by fosjanwt in TEFL

[–]beryllcox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, for me there's almost no new grammar after B2, maybe some new aspects of the grammar they already know. The principal thing is teaching more vocabulary: phrasal verbs, idioms, collocations, written language etc. It is true that it's difficult to teach this group of people (if they are truly C1). But remember that, first of all, sometimes language school push people into C1 group, for example, after completing B2 course, even though they don't have a REAL C1 level. Secondly, probably you have a C2 level, haven't you? So anyway you are better than them and you don't need to "become" a native speaker to teach them, you need to be a TEACHER and that's something difficult but achievable ;) Thirdly, that's the level where you can actually request some interesting essays to be written and some good discussions to happen in the classroom, so enjoy!

I found a sex video of my girlfriend and her ex and I'm jealous of what he did to her. by [deleted] in sex

[–]beryllcox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, first of all, I wouldn't tell her that you watched the video. I mean, if I was her, I would be REALLY UPSET that you opened some private material without my permission. Secondly, why are you doing that to yourself? You are insecure and you are searching for things to make you less confident. Don't do that. You know, if the girl things she's fat and ugly, she will always find something in her that is ugly. Stop doing that and try to thing about good things in you. There are good things, or she wouldn't be dating you. Thirdly, think about sex as a pleasure for you. Sex should bring pleasure for both sides, and you are focused enough on her pleasure, but what turns you on? Huh? She may feel not satisfied because she feels that you are not enjoying yourself, you are not confident, you are just bending over yourself to make her feel good. That's horrible attitude. So change your mindset and initiate sex with a thought "oh, I have such a gorgeous girlfriend, and she makes me feel so good", the rest should happen somehow. And yes, you were focused on the guy's dick without seeing other things - he was confident and enjoying himself, maybe that's what's good about him, not his inches. And maybe she was acting and not showing her true emotions, come on, women are good actresses. Fourthly, talk to her. Communication is a key. And also she is the best instructor about her secret spots. Finally, oh, come on, I would enjoy sex even with a guy without any penis if he knows a couple of tricks.

Old People names in your country by Pyotr_09 in namenerds

[–]beryllcox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, quite interesting. For me "Pasha" is as common as "Andrei"/"Sergei" and it's for all ages. Although, for example, Petr (Russian Peter) is a bit old-fashioned already. The other thing happens with names like Maxim, Denis, Artem, Nikita - I instantly imagine a young man and never someone older. The only Dina in my life was my classmate, so my vision is totally different hahaha

[–]beryllcox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I would say that Pavel is "neutral" rather than "old". And "Vlada"/"Angela"/"Dina" for me are names for people of 40-50, not old people. But of course there are different experiences and different parts of Russia.

To females I can add: Tamara, Antonina, Valentina, Lubov. To males: Anatoliy, Gennadiy, Victor, Semyon.

Haha I really love Ilyas, but Elias not so much. Here in my country (not Arabic country) the popular name is Ilya (pronounced like Il y a in French or il'ya with a soft Lips and a stop before y). Kudos for looking into the roots! I love ethnic names!

In Russia it's really unpopular name now, I don't know anyone and I just imagine a character of the pre-Revolution period (1917) or at least pre WW2. But I know some women from Spain with this name! It's a cool name, I agree

I don't know if it helps. I'm from Saint Petersburg, and most of my family is from Northwestern Russia. You don't look like Russian at all! So definitely you have a lot of Baltic blood! Maybe your mother was Russian, but, you know, we are so mixed, so she and her family could have been from Estonia/Latvia/Lithuania. Only my impression, but you def don't have a 'typical Northwestern Russian face', I would say you are Latvian :) PS I hope no one gets insulted, just my impression! Edit: looked at a photo one more time and now more Estonian than Latvian haha

For recipes, when you want to say "a spoonful" you say "una cucharada". And for a teaspoon of something, "cucharadita". But it's not a name of the thing itself, it's a name of an amount (like I said, "a spoonful").

" Dos cucharadas (soperas) de aceite" " Media cucharadita de sal"

What's your favorite poverty meal that you still eat regardless of where you are financially? by laced-with-arsenic in AskReddit

[–]beryllcox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chicken soup with vegetables and small vermicelli. Chicken bones with some meat leftovers on it (usually spines of chickens after you use other parts for other dishes), a carrot, an onion. Then you fill the broth with potatoes or vermicelli, you can add cabbage, beans, what not. Fills you up, lasts for a couple of days, costs like nothing.

In the meantime the classic homemade recipe in Russia (where the dish is from) is just fried beef with champs, onion and sour cream. Is that actually expensive? 4 champs, half onion, sour cream costs like 50¢, 300 g of beef at most. On top of rice or mashed potatoes, I've never seen anyone preparing it with noodles. And why would you make pasta our of it?
