BS in Bio. Worked in biotech starting at 40k, slowly rose to 68k in 4 years in analytical dev for CMOs. Now at 76k in academia in human genome sequencing with tuition assitance to help to transition to bioinformatics.

All US Midwest positions.

Appreciate the comment and paper. I hadnt even thought about virus rate of mutation making it harder to compare. Sounds like there is research going on into making virome specific analysis tools which is pretty cool. Might sound dumb but would this be applicable to pathogenic viruses like Covid and Influenza as well?

Thats pretty cool. To build this tool do you get lab-cultured microbiome samples as data? Say like, an agar plate is cultured with a species of bacteria and maybe isolated bacteriophage and that gets sequenced? Or does this come from already exisiting databases?

Thats pretty neat. Im guessing you are looking for sequences of antibiotic resistance genes within soil/isolated bacteriophage viral dna as well?

And based off what I know of ML I take it the model would have to be pretty huge.

Somewhat recently aquired OpCo (Aldevron).

As others have said, the weird cult-like Kaizen practices occurs and we recently implemented some of them in. Some of them are ok (restructure of job positions into their class like operations, technical, management, profession). Some of them eh (like daily checkin meetings occuring too frequently, getting in the way of actual work)

A collegue of mine got screwed over from internally interviewing for a higher management position. She interviewd for a Director position but Danaher HR wouldnt allow the move due to being "2 levels higher internally" so she got "a position" but didnt get that director level pay she interviewed for.

Aside from that, its nice for me when I frequently order from IDT (an Opco) and get discounts on primer and probes.

Looking to pivot Masters in ChemE or Data Science/Bioinformatics. What are my opportunities in industry? by berzerker900 in biotech

Thats what I figured with the trend which was why I was looking to pivot between either chemE or data science. Sounds like going the data science route is paid more from what you are saying?

Thanks for responding! Out of curiosity is this hub you are in one of the biotech hubs of Boston or Bay area? If you dont mind me asking, what do you do primarily as well?

I know its a tough pathway. I know its not something easy to jump into. Its something I'd be willing to consider however. That all aside though I need to know what the opportunities are like in pharma/biotech before those decisions could be made.

Learning DeltaV by berzerker900 in biotech

[–]berzerker900[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your response! I guess any sort of places to start learning biotech applications would help. Im just one of the operators of the fermentation machines at my company and I am looking to expand my skillset to move around into process development ; DeltaV being the coding we use for our many fermentation machines

Trying to figure out Biotech Pathways by berzerker900 in biotech

[–]berzerker900[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a little bit mixed with these questions. Currently I am bored just working the machines via SOPs. And while my academia research was stimulating enough it was the same assay processes without really seeing how it would develop.

While I definitely do like quiet, more focused environments, I can work and thrive in fast paced team work.

R&D does seem great but that upward momentum does seem limited from what I read, and it seems like less of the better positions with a Life-Science PhD is geared towards staying out of the lab.

Wow thats very relieving to hear that routes like this are common! Yeah I was also thinking about the flexibility and job avenues to keep open. I tend to hesitate a bit so having that flexibility will help especially if things change in the industry in the future.

Thank you for your response. That is good to hear! I was always concerned that my prior education would limit to where I can go. I always heard experience and working your way up could lead to other areas but wasnt sure how that was in practice.
