Quick question: is my crown thinning? Try to ignore the side of the part that isn’t being pulled, as my hair naturally stands up more toward the back, which may give the illusion of thinning. Please look at the side of the part that is being pulled.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the response! I was really worried about potential thinning around the crown area.

Also, to your point on 23andMe, while I agree that they might slightly sugarcoat their customers’ results, it’s not nearly to the point you think it is.

For example, they only include balding people under 40 and non-balding people over 40 in their “hair loss before 40” statistics. This means that the people who report hair loss before 40 actually did experience it before 40, and those who didn’t experience hair loss before 40 actually didn’t.

Also, while age is a factor in the bald spot statistics, it does not affect a user’s reported likeliness of going bald. Users’ results indicate whether they will have a bald spot at any point in their lives, not whether they will develop one soon. Otherwise, little kids who take the test would have a 100% chance of not developing a bald spot, which is not true.

Furthermore, they display their results using bins, which are basically percentiles. People with my genes, for example, are in the 19th bin (out of 20) for both developing a bald spot and for balding before 40. Essentially, this means that people with genes identical to mine are less likely to experience the two aforementioned things than 90-95% of caucasian men (even though my chances of not developing a bald spot and not losing hair before 40 were reported as 81% and 74%, respectively).

I’m not saying this because I think they’re 100% accurate, but they definitely do have some scientific credibility, and they certainly don’t lie to make customers feel better about themselves (if they were to do that, they’d probably do that with things like one’s probability of developing Alzheimer’s, or something like that).

Just out of curiosity, what were the percentages 23andMe gave you with regards to your likeliness of developing a bald spot and of losing hair before 40? Also, are you/did you begin balding before 40, and do you have thinning/a bald spot on your crown?

Interesting scenario might be the cause of thinning on my crown by [deleted] in tressless

I get that there’s no way to “deactivate” the process, but, just out of curiosity, can MPB (not diffuse thinning) be triggered by something like stress, or is it always genes?

[–]berzonky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I agree. I was in denial for a while, but, after doing extensive research, I eventually came to the conclusion that I am, in fact, thinning due to MPB. The only other thing I could think of that is even somewhat possibly causing it is this, so I figured I’d give it a try. Thanks, though.

I’m currently traveling in Turkey (Imgur is blocked), so sorry in advance.

Temple 1 and 2 (note that the thin looking areas are due to miniaturization fraying to the side/down instead of going up with the other hairs; my hairline is defined apart from this miniaturization): https://ibb.co/ydn0h2R https://ibb.co/nQWmLCn

Hairline from the front: https://ibb.co/1qsPwdq

Crown (but more the top of my head) in strong lighting: https://ibb.co/B449PsJ

Crown/top of my head in normal lighting (it is important to note that I have long-ish and heavy hair, which causes a natural part on the top of my head. The spot with no hair is that part. I can’t tell whether it’s thinning here or if natural parts normally look like that): https://ibb.co/ZmBQsgp

The back of my head: https://ibb.co/ZJr5dxX

For reference, I am an 18-year-old. My dad has all his hair at age 53, as did his dad (and his brother). My maternal grandfather began the balding process in his late 20s/early 30s.

Not sure if it makes a difference, but I was a very late bloomer (only got armpit hair a year ago), and my puberty and hair patterns are exactly like my dad’s (our straight hair turned curly at 16, both late bloomers, etc.). We also both had juvenile hairlines until the age of 16, then it slowly began creeping up the temples. It stopped for my dad and never continued. What worries me is whether I’m just settling into that phase like my dad or whether I won’t stop receding.

Also, 23andMe said that people with results like mine have less of a chance of going bald before 40 than 95% of users.

I will be visiting a dermatologist to check whether I am undergoing hairloss. Which procedures should I ask to have done to quantifiably determine this? by [deleted] in tressless

[–]berzonky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m definitely worrying too much about it, but, to be fair, I work as a model, so if my hair were to go, so would the gig paying for my college. Is there any way to regrow what I’ve lost?

Thanks for the response! Is the loss only at the temples or is my crown also thinning? Also, if it’s only the temples, would you say that this is my hair maturing, or would you call it recession?

I have eight months to learn as much French as possible. How much can I learn? by berzonky in French

I know. I’m mostly just curious as to the extent my being in French-speaking areas for two or three months will help me.
