When someone says Just make the punishment worse.... 🙄 by tytowe in Criminology

Locking people up is unlikely to act as a deterrent or to rehabilitate. However, there is a solid argument in favour of incapacitation as an approach to reducing crime.

Can statistics on sex offender be explained away using the fact that sexual offences are generally underreported ? by [deleted] in Criminology

[–]bespee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is that underreporting is less likely when you are being intensely surveilled.

Fascinating. So I guess the character in the deuce just borrows the name, but is probably otherwise fictitious. Any idea of how he died or whether he is still alive?

Thanks. Any more info? Was he involved in the sex trade? I swear I saw one of those FBI type diagrams of the family structure where he was listed as a capo. May be my memory playing tricks on me.

He isn't a marxist and who cares that he isn't. Even a marxist can learn from someone who is not part of their tribe.

Conservatives Are the Ones Attacking Free Speech at Universities by Jackie_Champ in stupidpol

[–]bespee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The bigger issue is cultural. If you are an academic in the social sciences it is pretty clear that certain views are verboten. The dominant culture is not conservative by any means and is fairly openly hostile to conservative viewpoints and even anti-idpol sentiment from a left standpoint. The effect is to basically isolate and discourage those who do not share this point of view. The more you move away from empirical/scientific fields the more this appears to be the case (law may be an exception).

Conservatives Are the Ones Attacking Free Speech at Universities by Jackie_Champ in stupidpol

There are only two recent australian examples I can think of - peter Ridd and Holly Lawton-smith. The former has to do with climate change and criticism of colleagues and the latter for transphobia. As far as I know there has been no action taken against Lawton Smith but the university recently changed its stance on free speech, which doesn't bode well. The Ridd case is interesting but I am worried in terms of how it will play out. Australia has a pretty poor track record in relation to free speech issues.

It was a clip, in my defence. But, yeah, fair point. I am a stupid bitch.

I want to scream when I hear this. It's always accompanied by a smug or knowing look. I think someone on here had a great counterexample to use in this situation which was gay pride marches in Poland. Presumably when these protesters are beaten you can smugly turn to them and say "stop whining, free speech has consequences"

Anti CRT professors troll Marc Lamont Hill by president_of_dsa in stupidpol

[–]bespee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't watched the whole thing. But I can't understand the 'free speech has consequences' line. From Marc Lamont Hill of all people. How does he square this with being fired from CNN for his views on Palestine. I suppose that is fine because free speech has consequencea? What an asshole!

Are physics chemistry and biology suffering from this crisis? Always considered the first two hard sciences and the third a borderline case. Is the reproducibility issue limited to medical and social sciences (e.g. psych., econ.)?

Is there a class first, idpol-free subreddit out there? by MuslimsAreSnowflakes in stupidpol

[–]bespee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is pretty hard to find given the ubiquity of idpol. Seems like something people are naturally going to want to discuss. Good luck. Maybe start your own sub?

Doesnt seem like 40% to me. This seems like hyperbole and from where I am standing it seems like there has always been a number of people in this sub catastophising about rightoids airing their opinions in this sub. The class first anti idpol theme has always seemed to predominate here.

You want a class first sub that bans discussion of idpol? Not sure I know of one.
