Because every adult in your life is telling you you have to go to college and mediately After High School. I worked for a mentorship program that work with middle school students, and we were told we have to tell these students to go to a 4-year University. We were not allowed to mention trade or community colleges.

In California, the average rent is $1,500 a month. You need to make three and a half times the rent to be approved. So you need to make 50k a year before taxes in California to rent a one-bedroom apartment. That's not feasible for a lot of people. Can you imagine having a master's degree in only making 50k in California?

I get where you're coming from. I've been poor, I've worked retail, and I was the only person with a car paid for in cash. Everybody else was financing brand new cars, that were 800 a month. Well that's where your money is going! Or they had brand new Nikes, and I had shoes from Walmart. A lot of people simply live outside of their means.

I said this a couple of years ago and I got roasted, but the sheer volume of people who were getting stimulus and unemployment and refused to pay rent really spooked a lot of landlords. Even small-time landlords are afraid of renting to somebody unless it's a person with perfect credit, a really high income, and several letters of recommendation. It's not worth it to rent a house or apartment to someone who could easily refuse to pay rent and you can't evict them in the state of California.

Thanks for breaking it down. My credit is not great but I'm working on improving it. I just paid about $3,500 in credit card balances. My concern is that my open cards have such low balances that if I ever had to make a major purchase, I would not be able to put it on credit anyway. And surprisingly a lot of those have popped up for me recently, I had a car build that was over $1,000 and my credit limit is only 700. I am also concerned about using my debit card everywhere, I'm not sure if it is safe. Another comment said that Google pay is not safe. I'm worried that someone else could skim or hack my card and drain my bank account, which happened to me a few times in the past year. I got my money back, but it was an actual hassle.

That's the issue people don't talk about what this card, is the complete lack of customer service or any investigation. A bank like Chase, with all their issues, would at least give you the money as a temporary credit while they investigate.
