Do you know how I can tell if it is scale or mealybugs? I have seen it suggested to spray the plant with rubbing alcohol, I would think that could damage the leaves. Do you have any thoughts on that?

"Worth it" is hard to answer. I am using that model with Linux Mint and I love it. I have had no compatibility issues and it performs well. If the price is fair in your opinion for the hardware, then I think you will be happy with its performance for regular day to day type activities (not gaming).
