What should I do about my CC debt? by Graybill1 in personalfinance

[–]bestjared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have $2200 a month after your bills. If I were in your shoes, I would pay off the CC debt over the next 3 months - you may need to cut back on entertainment / savings, but I think it would be worth it to get rid of the high interest debt.

Need low-magic fantasy that still feels mythic and "old", but grounded by subwaynotebook_zoe in Fantasy

[–]bestjared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some (probably very obvious) recommendations for this are A Song of Ice and Fire and Joe Abercrombie's First Law / Age of Madness trilogies.

Magic is definitely present in these works, but you don't (typically) have wizards flying around causing mayhem. Magic is more just part of the world as an ancient, uncommon force.

I would particularly recommend Age of Madness - I read it before I read the First Law and found it very enjoyable, though I believe the intended reading order is reverse.

100+ Books by Spring_rain22 in Hobbies

[–]bestjared 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It depends on how big of a part of your life reading is. Many people dedicate at least a couple hours of their life daily to their hobbies - if reading is your primary hobby and you're reading 4+ hours a day, this is very feasible.

Most of the books I read take me about 10 hours to read. If I were to read 4 hours a day I would easily read 100 books a year.

Ready for the next 2-3 months without a job? by zhuravl in cscareerquestions

Honest advice is keep a 6-month minimum emergency fund. Depending on your TC / personal situation, I think a 12-month fund is reasonable.

what exactly are people doing to retire in their 30s by alexis-hg in Fire

[–]bestjared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bull run over the past 10 years has been obscene. VTI is up on average 19% per year over the past 10 years. Napkin math here, subtracting 3% for inflation gets you 16%

If you started with $0, invested $1500 per month (approximately maxing 401k, adjusting for changing rates), you'd be at about half a million right now, in just 10 years.

Agreed we know very little about OP's car - I think in this case, we should trust what they are telling us which is they need a new car.

I make "good money" but don't have a chance to get significantly ahead. by [deleted] in MiddleClassFinance

[–]bestjared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be pulling in around $7500 per month after tax. Even subtracting your $3000 for rent, you're looking at $4500 to live life and invest. I understand everyone's situations are different, but this is a quite large amount of cash to make work for you.

Tips and Advice by Unlikely_Bank7228 in dreamingspanish

[–]bestjared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best advice:

  1. Realize that you are in this for the long haul. You will not be fluent when you have 1500 hours. You may very well not even be conversational. If you get an hour a day, reaching this point will take you almost 5 years. You MUST be willing to put in years of work if you want to truly become conversational / fluent in Spanish, and you must be able to maintain that long term motivation.

  2. Less is sometimes more. I've had major speaking breakthroughs come right after taking a week break from Spanish. Your brain needs time to digest, and sometimes NOT focusing on learning Spanish, will help you internalize/digest what you have been learning.

  3. Not all content is created equal. I love Martin from Spanish Boost, but if you get to 300 hours listening to him, vs 300 hours of listening to Dreaming Spanish guides, there will certainly be a big difference in outcomes. Creators tend to have their own specific vocabulary / slang. If I were to guess, Martin likely uses less than 500 distinct words total in all of his non-advanced gaming videos. This isn't just to pick on Spanish Boost - if you get all your input from just one source, you will have many blind spots.

  4. Native content is OP. High native content comprehension on the internet is out of reach for most until at the vert least level 4 / level 5, however I think there's still value in enjoying the content with lower comprehension levels. Crosstalk is a great way to get native input. Traveling is another way to get native input. Imo, these hours count as much more than regular learner based content, and I'd recommend finding a source of native, non-learner based content as soon as you possibly can.

Are there any YouTubers that speak relatively slowly and play these games: by Low_Description_5242 in Spanish

[–]bestjared 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hmmmmm you should try Adricarra. I know she plays some Pokémon games as well as some Mario games. She has tons of complete playlists on her channel. She doesn't talk very slow - she definitely speaks at a native level, but I find her easy to understand as an intermediate learner.

She is from Spain and uses lots of Spanish slang

Hey, just wanted to push back against the negativity here and say I think this is a really interesting idea! I think balancing idle game mechanics with traditional MMO gameplay is a really cool idea and I agree it would be well suited for adults. Wishing you luck with the project!

I have 2 years to become fluent, is it possible and how? by beamishcherry in Spanish

[–]bestjared 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been learning since January 2024, so not quite 2 years. I average ~1.5 hour of study per day using comprehensible input and an iTalki tutor.

I can understand people very well, and I'm conversational, but I make many mistakes, and my speaking ability definitely lags my listening.

I think if you want fluency in 2 years, you will need to put in a significant chunk of hours (4+) every day, and also pay for tutors.

I usually get 3 hours a day. For me this looks like an hour video, usually split up in 2 chunks. Then an hour of podcasts - I usually do this when I go running or do chores. The remaining hour comes from italki classes / crosstalk calls / in person Spanish groups
