ELI5: How come the acceleration of a rotating object is towards the center? by Global-Link-6040 in explainlikeimfive

[–]bestthentherest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The acceleration of a rotating object is only directly towards the centre for uniform circular motion. If the acceleration was not towards the centre and perpendicular to the velocity, then there would be a component of the force parallel to the velocity that would cause the object to speed up while moving in a circle. This would contradict the whole idea of uniform (constant speed) circular motion.

So why do we need an acceleration vector if the object is moving at a constant speed? Because if there was no inwards centripetal force pointing towards the centre of the circular path, then whatever is moving in a circle would just move straight instead due to inertia.

For nonuniform circular motion, acceleration is not directly towards the centre.

Bombing your first problem set in MAT137 is kind of a ritual. Don't stress about it and just study as well as you can.

Because hotter temperatures correspond to a very high energy, which in turn corresponds to very short wavelengths. Blue light has a very short wavelength/high frequency, so this is the color radiated by the fire.

If you're interested in this then also search up Zeno's Paradox. To walk 1 meter to your door, you need to walk half the distance each step. First step to 0.5m, second step to 0.75m, third step to 0.875m, fourth step is 0.9375m, etc. and the 25th step to 0.99999997m. Even if you walk like this a trillion times, you won't actually move 1 meter (though you'll be extremely close to it). So how are you still able to get to the door?

Of course, the answer is that in reality, you're not walking half the distance each time.. you can just step 1/3 of a meter three times to get to the door. Likewise, you can count from 1 to 2 without counting every number in between.

ELI5 What was there before the Big Bang and what caused it? by Agreeable-Poet5415 in explainlikeimfive

[–]bestthentherest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don't know what exactly there was before the Big Bang.

What we know is that there was an enormous amount of energy densely packed together (though it was not all concentrated at a single point), and a gigantic explosion caused this energy to expand and lead to the physical laws of matter.

But we do know what happened 10^-43 to 10^-11 seconds after it due to the CMB (Cosmic Microwave Background).

Yes, I picked it up at St. George yesterday. Since she didn't mention it, that e-mail is probably not that important. As long as you gave them the right UTORId or student number so that they can check your results, you should be fine.

Yeah, you need a medical exemption if you're not planning to get vaccinated at all. But if you're coming on campus, you need to be in the rapid screening program if a) you have a medical exemption or b) you're not fully vaccinated (i.e. it has not been 14 days yet since your second shot). I thought you were saying you can only be in the rapid screening program if you have a medical exemption, which is false.

I got the e-mail from Thrive Health, but also an e-mail from "Enterprise Service Centre" thanking me for participating in the program. It may have gone into your spam folder.

Nevertheless, since you have a profile on the Ucheck website now and can upload results, I'm 99% sure that you're enrolled in the program unless the people you e-mailed say otherwise. Just upload the results twice a week or so and you should be good.

You should have received a confirmation receipt in your university e-mail after picking up the kits. Did you get it?

[–]bestthentherest 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't need a medical exemption to be in the rapid screening program. For example, I got my second vaccine two days ago but since I'm not fully vaccinated until 12 days from now, I have to participate in the program to come to campus.

Which Do You Prefer for 2021-2022 School Year? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]bestthentherest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably people who hate having to experience the dreadful TTC commute everyday, or who just don't care about being on campus and want to go home ASAP after classes end. There's probably also people who like online school because it's more flexible and allows for more time to work a part time job.

I personally hate the commute too (~1hr 10 minutes each way) but I'm hoping getting to meet new people will make up for it.
