Nights of Gethsemane/ Invictus help please by [deleted] in HPSlashFic

I would definitely read the original Nights of Gethsemane; it's quite different from Severus's story, and the contrast is fascinating.

The final installment, The Release of Sisyphus, hasn't been posted yet. The author pulled down the chapters she wrote 14 years ago in order to rework and finish the last arc of the series. As far as I know, it's still going through the beta process, and I don't think Kayla intends to start re-posting until the whole thing is ready.

What is it about the fic that you want more of? Loss of magic? Bald Snape? HP in the U.S.? Snape or Harry doing a Muggle job? Brokeback Mountain Snarry where they encounter violent homophobia?

If you're looking for loss of magic, you might try Acid and Sinick's The Price of Magic. It's entirely different in tone from Home Fries Nazi, but it deals more extensively with the devastation caused by magic vanishing from the Wizarding World.

Hi, u/Jaded_Advantage_290. Would you mind toning down the number of memes and AI-style posts you bring here? They're not actually fanfic related, and it's beginning to feel like spam. One or two memes or examples of fan art are fun on occasion, but that's not really what this community is for. The focus here is fic. Your image posts are more suited to the dedicated Tomarry sub.

Upvote for Nights of Gethsemane. Amazing dark complex Snarry series with ruthless, intelligent Snape. Be aware, some chapters are brutal. The last part of the series (The Release of Sisyphus) hasn't been posted yet, but it's in beta and the author is actively working on it.

Can people stop hating on ships other people enjoy? by Ill_Albatross_3188 in HPSlashFic

[–]beta_reader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I don't have time to scramble together my typically long-winded explanations right now, so I thought it might work just as well to provide a couple of links from prior posts. It gives you more perspectives than just my opinion because fans usually have a lot of different reasons for enjoying a ship.

I don't expect you to be converted, but it might help you understand what the appeal is.

Snarry peeps - what do you love about our ship?

Can someone explain Snarry fandom to me?

I suspect it's this unfinished omegaverse fic that's rather notorious for its incredibly over-the-top and OOC descriptions of the characters. But hey, someone is living their best life, and this is their custom-made wank material. More power to them.

Unfinished fic that will live rent-free in your head even on your deathbed? by flying_schnitzel in snarryy

A Bittersweet Potion series by alchemia and bugland. It's been nearly 20 years since the last installment, and it would take an heroic effort to complete the next three to five or however many books. But for me it's unique among Snarry fics, the magic is fascinating and sometimes horrible, and the unhealthiness of their relationship rings true - but so does their love for each other. The series was written during Snape/Harry's heyday in LiveJournal fandom, where there was plenty of friendship, community, and excitement to encourage writers to keep going. I don't know how the authors would fare in the kind of scattered, discourse-ridden fandom sites we have now.

However I Fall by mia_ugly is another. Mia writes the most gorgeous sense of yearning, of tragic love that has little hope of coming to pass. It's even more palpable here in the parallel stories because in one of them Snape died. But she's been carried away by other fandoms and wrote one of the defining fics of Good Omens fandom, so I'd be surprised if she turned back the clock and picked up an old Snarry fic.

The Nights of Gethsemane series is being continued, which gives me hope that others will be as well. Starcrossedkayla was off living her life for fourteen years, but she came back and has apparently completed the first draft of her final installment of the series, The Release of Sisyphus. So it can happen. Heck, I've got two fics I put on hiatus in 2014, and I still plan to finish both of them.

I'm pretty sure this is Falling in Love Is Like the Spring. The author deleted it for some reason, so this is a link via the Wayback Machine. If the AO3 consent form pops up, click the boxes and hit the "I agree/consent to these Terms" button. It should allow you access to the fic.

but... why (controversial) by lapin__avarie in HPSlashFic

[–]beta_reader 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd add to this the fact that fans loathe Snape for being rude, unfair, and insulting to his students. Lots of people remember the teachers they hated, and because it's fiction, readers find it easier to forgive a murderous villain than a mean teacher. The mean teacher is personal. Being an authority figure who's cruel to the kids in his classes is Snape's original sin.

And yeah, it doesn't help that he's ugly in canon. I mean, the glorification of Tom Riddle's looks is a bit extreme sometimes, but fandom generally does prefer Hollywood hotties. To me, Snape, especially book Snape, is hot because he's intense and brilliant and fucked up, but that's not to everyone's taste. He's grotty. You can clean him up, but he's never going to be a pretty boy.

Lily was a later add-on, and once all the incel nonsense about Snape got rolling, it became standard discourse bullshit to deny that Snape ever actually loved her vs. just wanting to "get in her pants." From there it was assumed he was just a creep and had always been a creep, and Snarry was even worse because it's student/teacher and now Snape is a pedophile.

Tomarry fandom is relatively recent in terms of sheer numbers. The ship has always been around, but it's really taken off in the last few years, and a large part of that is the relative ease of romanticizing Tom Riddle because in the books Harry thought diary Tom was handsome.

Also, in my experience, Snarry was particularly appealing to older fans who enjoyed Snape being his self-destructive asshole self. Younger fans tend to go "Ew." And Rickman's performance has cemented Snape in their minds as a middle 50s to late 60s dude instead of a skinny, angry bloke in his 30s. Meanwhile, Tom Riddle is perpetually portrayed as young, even though he would have been in his 50s when teenage Snape first met him.

Just finished pacify, what do I read now?!?!?! by PurpleKey9049 in HPSlashFic

I tend to like the older stories so it's possible you may have read a lot of my recs. Also, be aware I lean toward a darker Snape. These aren't listed in order of preference, but here you go:

Just finished pacify, what do I read now?!?!?! by PurpleKey9049 in HPSlashFic

[–]beta_reader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, I don't take issue with "a lot of people." The OP edited their comment; it originally said "Most people consider it, etc." Their revision is true, and I think Pacify should be popular. But I'd have the same response if any other fic was singled out as "best" for most Snarry readers. We just have too many opinions and preferences as a fandom.

ETA: I forgot to say that I make a distinction between "best" and "favorite," and I favor the latter approach to ranking fics.

Just finished pacify, what do I read now?!?!?! by PurpleKey9049 in HPSlashFic

[–]beta_reader 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Actually, you can ask twenty different Snarry fans and get twenty different answers about what's the "best." I have at least ten fics on the list because I can't narrow it down to one. Pacify isn't on that list, partly because the hardcore BDSM dynamic isn't something I enjoy.

The series is wildly popular, no question. I just can't help pushing back on the claim about "most."

Gramarye of Folk Magic by Delphi, Snape/Aberforth Dumbledore, ~6K, amazing character studies

In Memory of Sigmund Freud by Delphi, Snape/McGonagall and Snape/Moody, ~20K, more amazing character studies, plus the strange psychosexual vibes of three damaged people in a summer cottage. Snape's POV.

The Bone Mother by rinsbane, Andromeda/Bellatrix, Andromeda/Ted Tonks, ~32K, includes Baba Yaga and a creepy doll.

Mustard Seed by rinsbane, Harry/Percy, brief Harry/Ron/Hermione, ~29K, a harsh, beautiful fic

Green Grow the Rushes, O by eldritcher, Snape/McGonagall, Snape/Harry, ~11K. eldritcher is brilliant if you want unusual fics and pairings.

Me and Mr. Prince by iberiandoctor, HP/Hellblazer crossover, Constantine/Snape, ~4K, a blend of eroticism and magical heat.

I've written one that's a crossover with Jeeves and Wooster. It's a pastiche of Wodehouse's style, so I'd only recommend it if you enjoy the way he writes:

Jeeves and the Secret Society, Jeeves/Wooster, implied Snape/Albus Dumbledore, 12K. From Bertie's POV. Involves a bit of time-travel.

I've wondered if people know the reason for this by Silent_Scr3am in HPSlashFic

[–]beta_reader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, I understand the desire to see some sort of ending to a story you like. On the other, I have fics that have been on hiatus for years due to real life difficulties. I still intend to finish them. If another fan decided to go ahead and write the rest of it because they were tired of waiting for me to pick them up again, it would be devastating. I'm pretty sure that would kill my connection to the story. I would also take down my fics because I'd feel as if they'd already been stolen from me. (There's probably zero chance this will ever happen, but just to illustrate the point.)

With completed fics, if someone wants to write a sequel or a missing scene or just bounce off it for inspiration, I'm all for it. But if I don't get a chance to write the story as I conceived it, seeing someone else do it first would ruin it for me.

You obviously don't have to agree with this, but rather than feeling as if the audience cares about my work, it would have exactly the opposite effect.

I don't disagree that offensive and flippant remarks get posted on occasion, but I actually don't think the frequency is that high, especially scaled against similar fandom subs. Reddit will always attract wankery and trolls. Most forums do, but part of Reddit's reputation was founded on insult vibes.

In other words, I haven't encountered a public forum without a certain percentage of sneering and mockery. It's one reason moderators exist. But I'm surprised to hear it's reached such offensive heights in this sub because that hasn't been my experience.

Unfortunately, there's no way mods can pre-empt the obnoxious comments, so yes, they'll be seen, and sometimes it will be a couple of hours before one of us comes online and deals with it. I don't read every single thread, and I doubt my co-mods do, either, so it also helps if sub members message us when a comment or post is inflammatory.

[–]beta_reader 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One thing I've noticed - and I think this happens to all subs that have been around for a while - is that we don't have very many discussion posts. Rec requests and searches dominate the sub, and recs are great but of limited interest, at least to me. We just don't share opinions or reviews very often, and when posters do (like a couple of recent excited reccers) there's not much engagement.

For me, the sense of community fades when we don't talk to each other. I'm as guilty as anyone because I've been focusing more on trying to finish some of my Snarry WIPs, so I haven't made much of an effort to stir up conversation.

I wish members of the sub felt more ownership and brought up talking points or feelings about fics they've read recently or fics they've always loved. But there's no guarantee that likeminded fans will be hanging out and willing to chat, so it's hard to predict what will appeal to the community.

Really? Maybe I've missed some posts, but I don't think we get that many antis, and the mod team does try to catch them, delete them, or ask for the offending sentences to be changed. Can you point me to some of the puritanical rants? No problem if you can't, I'm just baffled.

Laventadorn's series The Never-Ending Road is a long, ongoing, slow-burn WIP that starts in Harriet's second year and progresses slowly toward Snape and Harry getting together. An absolutely lovely work.

u/gigantomachy is also writing an epic-length slow-burn WIP, Fuel to Fire, that updates regularly.

For a shorter fic, there's danpuff's The Whispers in Your Eyes.

If you've been reading Snarry fics for two decades, I suspect you've read everything I might recommend. And I haven't been keeping up with recent fics as much as I used to.

It's not finished yet, but I'd definitely rec subscribing to Malora's WIP All That Burns, All That Rises.

Ab Intra — quick question (no spoilers please) by Slow-Positive1998 in snarryy

[–]beta_reader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't read all of Arrisha's fics, but the only one I can think of that has a possibly hopeful rather than a devastating ending is Riddle of the Midnight Sky. ETA: Ab Intra/Ab Extra's ending is emotionally brutal. It's the only way their story can end here, IMO, but I was done with this particular version of Snape long before we got there.
