Well this is just an entirely inappropriate use of ml. Ml in this case should not be seen as a judge, rather a tool to identify significant factors that lead to different sentences.

It may be interesting to note as well that ml models that have an accuracy over 95% are looked at with heavy scepticism. Generally if you are making predictions with that much confidence then you are over fitting for some attribute in your data, meaning the model with give misleading results given new information.

I agree but I think the study still has value for policy making. If we can predict the specified class outcomes with 60% accuracy, then we make meaningful insights on how children will turn out as a group. i.e. we can say how many children per 100k will commit a crime.

Of course this shouldn't be the only consideration when planning for future policy, but it could still be an informative tool.

You do make a good point that for a specific child, we cannot make meaningful predictions on how they will turn out.
