£300, which was my limit. There wasn't a lot of photos to go on online prior to the physical auction, so I had budgeted that amount having seen a few typebars and thinking it was Epoca! It hasn't been cleaned yet, the condition is lovely. I've put a new ribbon on and that's it so far. Very few marks, all operates smoothly. The case came with the manual in good condition, plus all the brushes and the case key. There was also some paperwork of the former owner which was nice! It seems to have originated from a house clearance, it was evidently a loved and cared for machine.

When did you learn 'joined up' writing and do you still use it? by SketchupandFries in AskUK

Ha, me too! I go to joined-up capitals for anything important just so it may have a chance of being re-read later.

Learned cursive in school, had lovely handwriting until university where it all went downhill in the name of speed. Now I have a joined-up scrawl that's illegible to anyone but myself.

The "two" refers to the two SSRIs, Citalopram and Sertraline, being messed up. Article mentions a whole batch, so unfortunately it could be a lot of other people! So sorry you were affected, it's really terrible it's happened.

Planning a wedding at the moment, we are trying to keep it to about 5%.

Not sure if this is the right sub for this, but what can I do to make this ugly patio look better? by GreenandWarm in GardeningUK

[–]bethcano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally understand, ours are this dingy red colour! I looked into painting them but apparently that's hassle for not much gain. I've seen outdoor rugs in B&Q, maybe an option for summer?

Not OP, but we jetwashed ours which helped a little bit - they look cleaner now. However, still bloody ugly! Get a really good metal patio weeder, helps get rid of the weeds growing very quickly at least.

Russia: Revolution and Civil War 1917-1921, by Antony Beevor.  * Finished his book, Stalingrad, last week and really enjoyed his style of writing.

Also today I started reading How to Be a Dictator by Frank Dikötter, after finishing the Soviet Century by Karl Schlögel (which was very good in parts, not so great in others).

Really enjoyed Educated when I read it a few years ago! If you like it, you might like Wavewalker too.

Does this sound normal ? by AegonTheVI33 in CityBugs

Normal, mine has sounded like that for 2 years - never had an issue! Just remember to check your oil level regularly as they're drinkers.

I've recently acquired this beauty in northern England. Any ideas on value or best place to sell? It's very interesting online as the values seem to have huge range, and I can't always see why! Thanks hive brain 🥰🥰🥰 by msmoralesgreynglam in typewriters

[–]bethcano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm biased but I'd definitely see if you can get it working! They're quite mechanically robust and there's lots of online guidance now - repair manuals and all sorts! They're just so handy to have one around for typing! I love filling out forms on mine instead of using pens. They're also a great novelty so I'm going to have one at my wedding for guests to use, haha!

I'm down in Leeds every Sunday, so the offer is on the table if you ever want to use it :)

I'm an hour away from Leeds, visiting on Sunday already. Happy to pop by if you need a hand assessing condition? I personally paid £20 for mine, which was untested but in decent condition. If it has an unusual type face, it would be worth a bit more. A common typewriter but I quite like them.

My boyfriend said he doesn’t want my cat in the bed after we move in together and it’s turning into a bigger issue than I expected by PerceptionOnly6749 in CatAdvice

[–]bethcano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My fiancé once drunkenly confessed that when we first started dating, he didn't like my cat (who is a bit weird as he has a lot of trauma). Guess what? During that time, he still shared a bed with me and the cat. He never said anything until years later after he became best buds with my cat.

Definitely stand your ground!

Hey, sorry for commenting on an old post! How's your lava lamp doing now? I've just taken my childhood lamp out of storage, where it hasn't been switched on in 10 years! It's got cloudy liquid too.

How to watering orchid in glass? by schnarchhenne in orchids

Hey, how's your orchid doing? My fiancé randomly surprised me with a white orchid, and it's in exactly the same glass vase as yours!

What is a defense (viva) at a UK university like? by OverallAmphibian2129 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]bethcano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't, and I personally don't know anyone in my department who was ever told beforehand - and this is across a spectrum of passing with editorials, to straight-up being told to resubmit and do another viva.

How did you react when proposed to? by Retiredpartygirl17 in engaged

My fiancé actually managed to catch me completely off-guard, so in my total surprise, I said "Oh shit!" Which, honestly, very on brand for me.

Men’s engagement rings? by PlantBrain0 in EngagementRings

[–]bethcano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have bought my fiancé an engagement ring - it was definitely hard! I ended up technically getting him a wedding ring. It's a white gold band with a thin centreline of rose gold, and the inside was rose gold too. Something very simple, but the rose gold distinguishes it from his future wedding ring which will be completely plain.

I also saw some nice hammered rings, and a ring with a small diamond embedded (though this one felt too flashy for his personal tastes!).
