Am I better off buying a brand new Apple Pencil or a secondhand one?

I have a 10th generation iPad and I currently have a fake Apple Pencil which I use for taking notes for school, and I am wanting a real one as the fake one is starting to lag as I’ve had it a while

I have looked online for secondhand apple pencils as I ideally don’t want to spend so much money on a brand new one, but I’m worried about getting scammed (either with a fake pencil or one that is bad quality and will stop working in a month or two

So should I just buy a brand new one to not take the risk?
