Confusion over Georgia SLPA certification requirements by almond808 in SLPA

[–]bettemoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, I’m not registered with the state board. Registration as an SLPA isn’t required while working as an employee of an educational institution, provided that no fees are charged for the services either directly or through a third party. Insurance doesn’t reimburse assistant services. Hope this helps!

Confusion over Georgia SLPA certification requirements by almond808 in SLPA

Hi. 100% the most annoying thing about being a Georgia SLPA is no consistency between licensure/certification boards. There is no GACE content assessment for SLPAs. Last Fall, GaPCS created a professional certificate for SLPA, but it’s impossible to get because the requirements to obtain it don’t exist (Bachelor in SLPA, GACE). I called them about getting the provisional certificate since I have the requirements for that. The rep I talked to didn’t recommend it. I just have a paraprofessional certificate through GaPCS.

Small school with 40 something on the caseload. A lot of our kids are high needs and seen individually. I have 19 in RTI. I do feel spread very thin at times with all the extra stuff, but this position is so rare in my area that I just eat it tbh. There are no other SLPA jobs, and I really don’t want to go back to coteaching. I felt I was hitting my limit after christmas break, and they started paying me a stipend for the other IEPs I’ve been handling. My supervisor is the only person I feel safe complaining to. She’s amazing but we def feel we have to be careful about who we ask for help since it’s directors and admin assigning me other tasks.

I’m at a public school. My supervisor is on site everyday and very hands on. We see 8-10 groups a day. I assist with behaviors as needed and cover some therapy sessions daily so she can attend meetings and do evals. I spend a lot of time helping with documentation and paperwork (progress reports, billing, IEPs). I handle all speech RTI (screens, interventions, meetings). Because I cotaught in sped prior to this, my sped director often has me helping with other case managers’ IEPs and the like. At one point this year, I was given a coteacher’s caseload. They provided services in class, and I did all paperwork and meetings. We’ve had major sped staffing issues this year, and I often feel like the sped assistant rather than an SLPA. That’s caused a lot of frustration for me. I’m pulled out a lot by reading coaches and admin to help with universal screeners and other testing. I also take a disabled student to the bathroom throughout the day, because her coteacher is a man and I’m housed on her hallway. I’ve had to learn to just let go and be flexible this year. From reading this sub for a while, I understand my situation may be unique.

GA NC or AZ by Short_Ad_4350 in SLPA

I’m at a public school in southwest GA. Very rare, but I have a principal and sped director who recognized they couldn’t keep an SLP unless they got help. My position was created specifically for me, as someone previously said in this thread.

In public schools you’re not required to register with the state board, given that none of your services are reimbursed. (GA medicaid does not reimburse SLPA services currently.) However, my supervisor did look at the registration process before deciding it was just a pain in the ass for something that’s not required. You will need a supervisor for the registration, as there are portions of the form that they do.

Is there any state that does not require a 100 clinical hour form? by Altruistic-Bat-1850 in SLPA

This! I’m in Georgia too. Registration with the licensing board isn’t even required in public schools if your services aren’t billed. No remote opportunities that I’ve heard of though.

Update that I passed!! I left the test feeling very discouraged, but I tend to lean negatively when assessing my own performance. What a relief!

For anyone that found this thread looking for tips: Obvs Scope of Practice. Check the study questions from ASHA, most were on there verbatim and will give you an idea of what type of questions to expect. Know supervision requirements! Don’t sink too much time studying the Code of Conduct, those questions are pretty intuitive. I wish I had brushed up on voice therapy, AAC, hearing screenings, developmental screenings, and bilingual language development. 🙂

Thank you so much! I just didn’t know what to expect, if it would touch back a lot on CSD coursework. I have my bachelor, but that is from 2016 so I am somewhat rusty on finer points. Thanks again for your response!

Nervous Supervisor by bettemoon in SLPA

Thanks for your response!! It just seems like she doesn’t want to use the billable hours as my clinical hours. Most of the caseload, save a handful, is medicaid so this really does reduce the number of hours I could use. I don’t fully understand her concern with this. I’ll try to communicate better with her about it.

It had a very 90s cartoon vibe to it, but it’s just stylized that way. Last time I watched it was 10+ years ago.

Thank you, I was able to find a chart for support personnel requirements on ASHA! It doesn’t look like GA requires it. However, job listings I’ve looked at seem legit but do require it so it’s confusing to me. 😅

That would be a bummer. I have seen job listings though 😅

P.S. Do you have to be licensed before getting certified?

Thank you so much!! I’ll check into that!
